Welcome to Houston! Hope you enjoy your stay here. As for LFS, most of the good ones are on the south & west sides of town. Take a look in the Sponsors section. There are a few more around.

UTI is north, off I-45, right? Not the best area south of there, Greenspoint area (Gunspoint was a common nickname, LOL!) but supposedly it is better now.

North is the Woodlands, a very nice area, Humble to the east is nice, and anything off FM 1960 to the west is good.

Good luck on the move. You found a good group here, I've gotten quite a few good deals and met a lot of good people on here.

Welcome to Texas and marsh! If its the UTI by the airport, that area can be a little ruff. We have pleny of LFS. Do you know where abouts you will be living? Got a job lined up for while you are here? I could hit up our tool guys to see if ther are any shops hiring

Welcome! You will not want to live by the school. They are right, that area is rough. I'd recommend SW Houston. We have great LFS's and lots of very well priced apartments that you don't have to leave a boot on your car to sleep soundly at night.

I don't know anything about Columbia, SC but this is a BIG city. Best thing to recommend is keep your eyes open, if something looks shady it's best to avoid it (This goes for parts of town, apartments, people, bars, the whole bit). I've lived here all my life and never had an issue that wasn't my fault. :)

OH YES, get a navigation system. It will save you many headaches.

as for jobs, hopefully ill be able to transfer to the carmax down there. i hear there is three down there, so whichever one is not too far from the school. im still deciding on where to stay but i have heard of the woodlands before. im still waiting to talk to the school for their housing options. columbia is not a big city but its not small either. our only "city" part is downtown columbia. im more of a "keep my head down, and mouth shut" type person. so if it looks shady, youll probably wont see me there. but i do like bars and chill spots. i did four years of college already, so the college scene would be cool to. im trying to think of what else to say, lol. the one question i do have though, just to be honest. what is racism like down there?? here you can feel the tension, and i freaking hate it!!

I take it by asking about racism, you are african american/black. So let me inform you, i moved here from NY about 5 years ago, and though i have heard there are some towns that could be an issue, i have to say houston and everywhere else i have been thus far have not shown me signs of racism, what you will see here in houston is a lot of mixed race couples, neighborhoods are mixed. members on this forum are great to talk to in person, and for the most part, most will talk to you as much as you like about the hobby should you visit a few reefers homes. Can't tell you about the night life too much as i stopped partying a while back. but down town houston, and the richmond st area(sw houston) has lots of clubs and bars. http://www.houston.com/nightlife/

Hope this answer your question and welcome to houston and marsh reef.

There are several Carmax locations, one is just a couple of blocks from the school on I-45, the next closest one is right by me in Cypress (NW Houston), probably 20-25 min away. The other two are down south and I would not want to be making that drive everyday in Houston traffic. But if you did end up at one of the south locations, maybe living more centrally would work out better and you could go against most of the traffic coming in town in the morning and going out during the evening. But rents are higher closer in town.

Check into the school housing carefully before going that route. When I was in tech school the school housing put four of us into two bedroom apts, not a good situation. Nothing like coming home to find your gallon of milk gone and fruity pebbles gone. My advice would be to find someone you click with after a few months of school and see about sharing a two bedroom apt or rent a house with some other dudes to make it more affordable.
