That's the same as any wet/dry filter system, just other name for it. You should be albe to find something under wet/dry filters.

do you have a pic? there are two diff kinds I saw in my research. its about where the wet/dry part is(the box full of bio-balls)

the basic idea is for the water to come from the tank, through the part with the bio balls. from there it is usually released to the bottom of the sump where the protein skimmer pulls and returns the water to. then there may be a series of baffles to prevent micro bubbles. after this stage a return pump should send it to the tank or a chiller*in my case*

sorry if I got something backwards or left somethign out. I am sure i will be corrected.

That sounds correct reefling. I guess the important question to ask is what type of tank are you setting up with this filter? If you are planning on running a fish only, or a VERY simple/basic reef then it should be fine with regular water changes.

However, the use of bio-balls is an aged concept and proven to have its faults. Like FISHSTICK said, after a time, nitrates will build up in the bioballs and will give you issues.

What you can do is run the system without the bio-balls, and convert that compartment into a refugium. There is a lot of information out there on converting wet/dry filter sumps.
