Hello Reefers

I have a 20 gallon nano reef tank going on 3 years now. I am trying to really master this thing before I go on to a bigger tank. I am struggling keeping any Goniopera coral alive past 3- 6 months. I have all the Hanna checkers and red sea manual checkers. Does anyone here like to do house calls and best practice reviews? I would really love to have some knowledge share session. Please sound off if you can help. Thank you community

Let's start with telling us about your tank. What are your parameters? How often you doing water changes, dosing anything?

the smaller the tank the tougher it is to maintain parameters. Gonis are really difficult for me no matter the size.
When things are not going right for me and parameters look perfect then I start checking meters. They will lie to
you. Have your water tested by a second party.

Gonis are notoriously hard to keep alive past about 6 months. I don't know if the aquacultured varieties are any better but assume they are.

As already mentioned, Goniopora are hard to keep but there are a couple of things that can really make a difference. One is the trace element manganese, which is limiting in nearly all reef tanks. This element is consumed by nearly every organism in the reef. I found that supplementing this and iodine are essential for certain critters in the reef tank.

Here is a picture of my red Goni just now. I have picture of it over the years and can share with you. I do know that once I started supplementing manganese it really took off. I also do regular water changes of 5% twice a week.

That looks great. I love seeing how they just wave around. I have heard of the manganese dosing. Do you dose iodine daily as well?

I wondering if I should just focus on a different variety of coral.

Where are you getting these gonis? Are they aquacultured or maricultured?
