man, i'm soooo addicted. the latest addittion is a 3'x8"x10" bookshelf aquarium that i had made to sit perfectly on top of my desk hutch.

specs:

96 watt coralife fixture (adding moonlights soon, thanks to the worksop)
red sea prism skimmer
ac 500 hob modded into refugium
75 watt heater
15 pounds of live rock
oceanic salt and r/o water

it's fully cycled now, just waiting on clean up crew to do their magic. i'll post some close ups after the diatoms are all gone.

Great shot of the clowns. I love my black percs, to the point I've set up a new tank because they couldn't get along.

Add pics as the tank progresses.

That's the 3rd one of those evil eyed crabs I've seen someone post about in about as many weeks. I wonder why they're suddenly so prominent?

It's probably not the third crab since one of those posts was mine and it's the exact same crab. Kyle (dreamersdisease) is my husband. :)

I like that black sand in there. Whenever I get a nano tank Im definetly putting black sand in there. I think it gives nano tanks a really good look to them and provides a lot of contrast to the corals. When are you planning on putting in corals? Have anything specific in mind in the way of what you wanna have in there?

i'm not putting any coral in there until all of the diatoms are gone and the hair algae is under control. my original plan was to carpet this thing with gsp and zoos, i might still go that route, but not sure yet. any suggestions?

Im gonna do that exact same thing with my nano if I get one. I think im gonna try and get one of the sides of the glass covered with GSP then do the rest zoas and just carefully pick awesome ones.

I tried this at one point as well. After about 3wks the sandbed wasn't black anymore, it was more salt and pepper from detritus from the LR. I would vacuum it and add more black sand, and then a week later it would look salt and pepper again. When I moved I dumped the black sand entirely because I hated fighting it, and I like a white sandbed more than the salt and pepper look.

yeah, i totally agree. this will be the only time i ever use black sand. the uber fine white sand sucks too. it was always being stirred up and sucked into the filter/refugium, and there was a light dusting on all of the rock as well. you have to admit, they do look nice, but too much of a pain.

I've actually used the super fine arragonite in each tank. It sucks when the tank is brand new. Once stuff starts really growing in/on it though it doesn't stir up as easily. That break in period blows though.

yeah, two of my friends lost powerheads to the white sand storm. it does settle , but my bicolor blenny liked scooping it up in his mouth and blowing it up into the water column, just to watch it be sucked up in to the pump. he was entertaining to watch untill he jumped, or so we think. we came home one day and he had vanished into thin air. i am thinking one of our cats had a tasty 20 dollar snack after finding him on the floor. poor fellow.
