Hey Guys.

I had a 68g tall reef tank about a year and a half ago and been itching to get back into it. So, for this tank I wanted to do a whole custom stand/wine storage area. I've actually been working on this for a couple of months already and just decided to post it. I dont really have too many pictures of all the steps along the way. This is not my first time building something like this. But, definitely a first doing it this nice and detailed.

My inspiration on this project was a plan that I saw on a 90g tank.

So I started ripping strips for my face frame and the sides of the three boxes for the stand. I wanted the sides on my tank to be a little bit bigger then the his. More shelf space and cabinet space on the bottom. I will also be adding in a wine bottle and wine glass storage on one side with a little pull out top to actually pour the wine while at the tank.

I think the tank needed some reinforcement for my own piece of mind. Ive heard bad things about using 4x4 and treated wood because of it twisting and such over time. Plus, its just an overkill. These are some scrap 2x4 pieces I had laying around. I made all the pocket holes with a kreg jig and applied wood glue to every joint where there is wood touching another piece of wood to avoid the possible twisting of any wood. May be an overkill. But, I like it.

If anyone has any questions on how something was done or if they want a close up picture of something. Let me know and ill do the best I can to accommodate. I will post more pictures as I move on in the build.

Ok. The next step was for me to make the top of the stand to tie everything together and distribute the weight throughout the tank. What I did is put a whole sheet of plywood on top and traced out where i needed to cut the plywood. I wasnt too worried about making the cut super straight. As long as I was cutting it a little bigger then the trace it would be fine. After I cut it out and got it pretty close. I screwed it into the stand. I predrilled with a counter sink bit. Once it was screwed in, I got a flush bit on my hand held router and made the top perfectly flush with the stand.

My tank just came in. Doing a fill test and weight test on the stand. Got that 40b when they had the $1/gallon sale a while back to convert into a sump. Bought the skimmer used from someone here on the forum as well. Hopefully that works.

I plan on doing a mixed reef tank. Mainly soft and LPS corals. Might have one or two SPS. Not looking to grow a lot of SPS though. Does anyone know or have a good plan for a 40b sump?

hey guys.

Ok did some more things over the week.
- added crown molding
- added brick trim, molding, base boards on stand
- wine rack
- wine glass rack
- table top drawer
- filled in gaps / screw holes
- finish sanding all surfaces
- added shelves on other side
check it out and let me know what you think.

my nail gun was messing up and cause some nails to not go in all the way and bend. nothing some putty and sanding could take care of. also used some wood glue and duc tap to hold those little wrap around pieces in. you can see it on the next picture.

You're lucky I don't have the money, space, or time for another tank - otherwise I would be asking you to build one for me. Very nice!

Hey guys,

Built the doors this weekend. Cost me about $90 in materials. Priced these doors online and it would of cost me about $380. I had to use my buddy's router table to make them. Rounded off the edge on the table top drawer. Going to primer everything soon.
