Last week, one of my Hawaiian Feather Duster head(the feather part) fell off, then another head today. Don't know why. Everything else are fine. Water has been cycled and running for a year now. I have over 46lbs LR in a 36G tank. Help! Need info.

Don, my understanding is that they simply do this from time to time, no need to worry just yet as they will grow a new "crown".

Assuming there is nothing stressing them, they'll will do that from time to time, and grow a new one. How long have you had the featherdusters?

Are you adding anything to feed the feather dusters? They are filter feeders and need DT's phytoplankton or something similar to feed on.

I had some crabs ripping mine to shreds and they grew back in a previous tank.

A 4 inch tube came out attached to the crown when mine threw his. Is he dead or is this normal?

That doesn't sound good Many of these worms are about 4" long and cylindrical (they live in the tube)

When did it throw?

Tell us about your system. was the FD in high flow/low flow, up high or down low, what did you feed it and how often?

how large is your refugium?

bjcsimon-I have seen them pack up and move to a better location, although it seems pretty rare that they do this. Just leave it alone and it will find a happy place, and grow another crown. Feather dusters are very easy to keep- so if they are dying on you-there is something very wrong with your tank(or something is eating them :) )

The FD wasn't looking good in my new tank, so I asked for help here. I was told to feed it DT's. It had a couple of DT's feedings over several days and was perking up and looking better. Then it threw the crown and tube.

It was in a low area with low flow protected by rocks and sand. I put the top half of a 2L bottle over it to concentrate the DT's on it. He apparently didn't like that.

Guess I'm minus one feather duster. I've continued to feed DT's every other day just in case he's still in there.

Thanks for the help.
Sorry I highjacked your thread!

I personally would be surprised if you killed it, but I've been wrong before 8O Time will tell. I would only feed the DT's every third day.

No problem :D Keep feeding the DT's at least once a week and you're pod population will explode and things will grow that you didn't even know you had :)

It's a new tank. I was told not to feed the entire tank. What do you think?
