First, thanks to everyone for the input, it really helps. Tank is painted, drilled and ready to be plumbed beananimal style. Next, I have decided to build the sump because it is the only way to maximize my space. Sump will be 17x15x17 with drain leading to filter sock, bubble magus, Baffle to the fuge around the bend to another double baffle for chemipure, finally to return pump. Thinking about 600 ehiem or mag7 for return.

Note: Drilling wasn't as bad as I thought, though I should have used a template. Also, the exit got a little chiped on the edges i guess due to a slight wobble.

go with eheim, and plan to plumb soft to get rid of any vibration noise.

what size holes did you go with?

Flexrac, I really appreciate you help. I live in college station so there lies my problem. I'll see if he can ship for a reasonable price. I went down a few weekends ago to pick up the 30 and stopped by Citypets and FJW. Wish someone would open a LFS with saltwater here in Aggie land.

Wouldn't a mag 7 for a 30 gallon be a bit much? I have been told a mag 7 would run my 75.

I didn't read what your overall plan was. Perhaps you're planning to split off your return and use it for other things as well?

It is too much for a 30/g but with a ball or gate valve you can throttle it back sum.

Looking at a 600 gph pump due to turnover, head pressure, and size of pipe used 3/4 drain 1/2 return. I will install a ball valve to back it down. Maybe smaller pump would work better?

Typically, I would read that 3 to 5 times the volume for turnover rate. 30 gallons x 3 = 90 gallons per hour. 30 gallons x 5 = 150 gallons. Keep in mind headloss. Mag 3 may work just fine.

You may need more if you are going to also run a fuge, skimmer, chiller, extra DT flow.

Larger pump requires more electricity and creates more heat, especially if dialing it back more than half way.

Of course, this is all just my opinion. By no means, am I the expert.

I was doing 10x turnover so 300 gph plus head pressure. I was planning on spitting the return but not sure right now. Only drilled the one. Eheim jumps from 300 to 600 did not see any in between. Never like to be short so I figured with the ball valve i should be ok at a higher gph, however I did not think about the heat. I really do not want a chiller and I'm already pushing it by using he 150w mh. Dave

You'll be fine. I used to run 2-250/W MH and a Mag pump which ran internally without a chiller.
