Since you have no life in the tank my suggestion would be to kill the return. Pull as much water as you can fit into a container (5 gallon buckets or larger can). Then add salt mix to the container to bring the SG up. Once it's up pump it back into the tank. Turn on the pump to let it circulate for an hour, then test and repeat if needed.

Got it?

This will keep salt from getting into the sand. Which is what would happen if you tried to mix in the tank

Cool thanks Llamma! That is a good idea but I decided to just add salt to my 5 gallon top off jug mixed it around and add it when the water evaps. But I may try your method if this doesnt work fast enough.

Tested the water this morning via API test kits. Ammo tested about 1.0ppm so Im assuming the nitrogen cycle is coming along no nitrite at this time. I added three small pieces of LR to my sump yesterday to seed the tank. SG is coming up as well. Right now its 1.023 thanks Llama for the advice!

I say break it down and overbuild the stand into a wetbar with the tank as the backdrop. that way you have some place to put full liquor bottles! ;)

Water Param update:

SG 1.025
pH 8.2
Ammo 1.0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Cal 320
Alk 8
Mg 900 (I have BRS two part mg supplement and will start dosing to get to 1350)
My temp has had a 6 degree fluctuation which concerns me. It falls to 76 during the night and raises to 82 during the day.

That range isn't too bad. If you are really worried, go get yourself a titanium heater. The one with the seperate in line control that has a dial to set the temp. It even has a little light on the control that comes on when the heater is on. Set it to 77 and you are good to go. Much cheaper than a chiller and keeps the range in check.

Lookin good looking good

Thank you for the tip and comment as always Lllama!

I am going to keep an eye on the temp and see if it stabilizes not to big of deal at the moment considering the tank is still just cycling.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about that range. I just like the heater to be there just in case.

If you only hit 82 in the hottest time of year I'd say you are pretty set.

I was having a similar problem. I bought a fan for the sump I have it hooked up to the light timer when they are on the fan is on. It keeps my tank within a few degrees night or day. My tank stays around 77 to 79. Before I was pushing 84 during the day.

This is the fan I purchased it will drop temps 3-5 degrees it is loud but in the sump I don't notice it. I tried the Walmart fans they work ok but not as good.

I think you are rushing this. Let the tank cycle for at least 3-4 weeks. Do not dose anything at this point. A small piece of LR is probably not enough to start a cycle. Throw in a piece of raw shrimp (from the supermarket) in the tank. You don't even need the light on...just make sure that the skimmer is running. GL.

I agree with RR-man about not dosing. No need to until you have something to consume it.

However, with amm at 1.0 I'd say you are cycling pretty well. Remember this is only the beginning stage of your nitrogen cycle. You may even see ammonia rise more before you see some conversion start. The raw shrimp (chopped and placed in a media bag) couldn't hurt, but is not required in my opinion.

Questions:
Where did you get the LR?

Did you put any into the DT?

Would you like a scoop of fuge sand when things get stable? :)

Good tips guys. I def wont dose anything. I didnt think that I was rushing but now I realize!

tsman: Thanks for the link on the fans. I will def look into that.

RR-MAN: I have some small shrimp in the freezer will that do? And my skimmer has been running since day one.

Llama: My buddie gave me two hand sized pieces of LR that is covered in coraline, but he really isnt the safest reefer I know. He used well water for everything and never does water changes and brags about it....but living down here in the South there really isnt any body else to go to. I may ask Don at frags and more if he can spare a few pieces. I didnt put any LR in the DT just in my sump. Should I put it in the DT? And yes I would love a scoop of sand! Were are you located?

I at beechnut and 59, a few miles away from City Pets. If you swing by I can give you a few of my fuge rocks and a scoop of sand. You can toss my stuff in the sump and tranfer the stuff you already have (if it is pest free) into your DT. The reason I say this is because my sump rock will most likely have caulerpa and other macro growing on it already and you don't want to take a chance with that stuff in your DT.

Let me know.

PS - I use RO/DI and change my water. :)
