I am planning on setting up a 10g nano. I have purchase the substrate, washed it and placed in the tank, lights ready and filter ready. My question is, if I take some pieces of live rock from my 55g, a cup of live sand from my sump and add new water, will the tank need to cycle? I don't know if there would be enough benefical bacteria with just the LR and LS to keep from going through a cycle?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks, Mike.

Thanks

Thanks SeanB,

I am planning on using at least 15lbs. of the rock out of my tank, rock has shrooms, zoas and such on it now. I thought so too, but wanted to make sure.....maybe someone has done this before and had success.

Thanks again.

you might have a very short cycle, or non at all, i think it just depends on how much bacteria culture is on the rock. i would use plenty of sand from your established tank. that seemed to help the most for my tanks. you will still see a diatom outbrek regardless of what you do. sad, but true.

Diatoms

Thanks guys,

I plan on doing a weekly 1 gallon water change, this should help get rid of the diatoms kinda fast.

you could use water from your other tank to fill up half of the 10 gallon. You really wont see a cycle then.

That's what I thought.

Leaffish,

That's what I was thinking also, do a water change in my 55 and keep out about 5 gallons and put in the nano, finish off with new water. Baiscly, the substrate will be the only new thing in the tank, everything else is coming right out of my 55.

When i switched out my 20L i added all new sand and one cup of my old sand. Then i threw in my LR (some which have been in the garage for 4 months) used 50% new saltwater and 50% old water. I never saw a cycle. I did the same thing with my 9 gallon to.
