Purchase frag of this coral from a sponsor somewhat recently. I thought i liked low light so placed it in the bottom level of my tank. It turned brown and developed a green sheen. Does this coral require more light than I have been lead to believe via research?

Brown ain't good as that's the results of your parameters are off, most likely your Po4 or No3.
Green is indeed it needs more light.

Hi Miller, I have the Loripes nearly the same light rate as most Montis in around 150-180PAR.
That means compared to most Acros, those need much less light.
However in order to have those bright and white bring them up a little!!!

Also if they turn green and dark, under enough light, then you might dose to much nutrients into the tank.
The darker color can as well too much nutrients, not just not enough light.

Low nitrates and low phosphates are the key for bright Acros.

Hope that helps a bit.

Saw Bens response too late. Basically the same.
Since the post is somewhat older, how is the Loripes doing now these days???

Thanks everyone. I test my parameters and they are alway within acceptable ranges. My other acros are growing and maintaining color. I moved it from the bottom to just below halfway in the tank. Dennis, yours is a nice color but much darker than mine was when I got it. Mine was loser to white than blue. Are there different color types?

Dennis,
Miller got a frag from this colony here, classic Acro Loripes.

Miller,
I think on mid level it will make better, anyways if not bright enough bring it further up.
It is very hard to tell buyers where to place the corals in their tank, since every fixture is different.
Special caution has to be taken into account when transfering from a MH tank into an LED tank.

I noticed a shimmering green base on my one, when I started dosing iron. Hint hint.

Not much has changed. It has grown a tiny bit but not much. With the change in placement it has not changed color that I can tell. It's still a reddish brown with the green sheen. It is under a six bulb T5 fixture. I'll give it a couple months then may move it again. I have a Red Sea color enhancer product maybe I'll start dosing that. Thanks for the advice!

Miller, reddish brown means still more light, I would look for another spot and bring it a few inch higher already.
Also, recommend to borrow the club PAR meter, you will be very surprised when you map your tank like most people.

This helps to find good spots for corals. I did a picture of the tank, and wrote the PARs on the picture for future use.

Update - It has gone through a few color morphs. I went form reddish brown to a yellow/brown with a green tent but started growing more when I moved it up. The tips/new growth are now coming in blue! Yay! Thanks for all the advice.

Great to hear that.
Did you use a PAR meter or did you just moved it further up?
