I stopped in there today to see if he had any 80 watt 60" T5HO bulbs. Well, they didn't have the bulbs (seems nobody in Houston has any), but I was absolutely blown away at how great Kevin's store is looking. He got a new sign on the top of the store, he has added two new tanks, moved the drygoods over to the other side of the store, and had the floors redone. I must say his store looks freakin' awesome.

When I got there he was setting up one of the new Red Sea MAX 250. He now has three large frag tangs, one with sps and zoas, one with lps, and the other with softies and anemones. He had some great looking Desjardini tangs and a ton of other great looking livestock.

We need to get this guy on board as a sponsor.

What's really amazing is that Kevin built those frag tanks, stands, and refrugiums himself.

I was there couple weeks ago and saw perhaps the best zoa collections in town - the only negative is that most of the nice ones were already sold:) The two new acrylic tanks are just awesome! and the new floor is cool!

Kevin really takes care of his store and keeps it in top shape. Always helpful and knowledgeable. I go there almost every week since its really close to me and always has a great selection of fish and corals. Just went there yesterday and picked up one of the sailfin he had which I think its a aussie sailfin has really bright colors and markings. +2 on him being a sponser

How is his sponsorship coming along?
he won't sponsor us. there's just not enough to entice him.

So many of Marshians buy from him anyway, why would he sponsor us when he already gets the business? Sheesh, that's a no brainer...

I would like every LFS in town to WANT to have a piece of this club. My driving force is to not make someone sponsor us but have them clamoring for our business/Sponsorship to advertise.
I think that comes slowly.... there are quite a few obstacles but we gotta start somewhere and if the Out of town companies on the East coast are willing..........Why not the very local ones?
LFS are gonna have more competition for local business from companies on the East Coast/West Coast entire US.
Makes sense to me-as a former business owner -I would want to keep all my options open and as many people well served.

I will comment based on another comment I made in a different thread. If a store (whatever store it may be) already has lower prices then what value is it to them to have a membership? Is the margin there to have addtional discounts on their already great prices?
Goby- you know as a former business owner- does the overhead support being able to compete with an online store or someone who is doing online sales and having additional discounts based on a Marsh sponsorship?
Many local retailers are forced to compete with online businesses which do not have the overhead which is a downfall, even though they are supporting the local community. After spending the time with a customer to make a sale, they are presented with the online price, and they do not have the ability to compete.
So, again, what is the value for having a sponsorship and offering a discount for a store that already offers rock bottom prices and is local? It seems that everyone is always trying to do group buys to lower the cost of the hobby but at what point do you draw the line on supporting the cost of the hobby or trying to get the hobby for free? As you know every hobby has a cost. With the current economy, everyone is struggling and trying to support the hobby they dearly love, including myself. Even though I am trying to afford my hobby, I think the greatest value is in supporting our local establishments as they are the guys who are here for us in our times of need.

Yes,
It is each establishments decision as to what they can and want to afford.
What kind of advertising they want to spend money on, what exposure, how much they want their company to grow. Sometimes the bigger you are the bigger the headaches.
I think for as much traffic as we get on our MARSH forum we are a bargain in advertising.
But, it depends on the establishment. It seems to me that most stores make a weekly order and try to sell all stock on the weekend before it has a chance to die.
Keep overhead low. Keep your losses low.(no one can blame anyone for that!)
I personally prefer to buy fish from other members. I have had much better luck and a healthier/heartier specimens.
However, most equipment is usually a planned purchase.
That's why it is difficult to buy a stock bulb on the weekend. Those drygoods are hard to stock and it is inventory sitting on the shelf.
Like all things in life...it's not cut and dry.
If it is good for me.....I buy it and I support folks that support me.
If MARSH has a good reputation of members that are knowledgeable....good customers...Locals will support the club if it is in their budget.
There is nothing wrong with everyone doing what is best for them.
My point is our advertising is a BARGAIN. :D :D
