I bought a mated pair of false clowns from Global a few weeks back and was wondering if there is a particular anenome that they will host in? I would like to add one to the tank but am not sure what to get.

They should host in a BTA but since they are probably bred/raised in captivity they may not take to an anemone. All you can do is try.

Thanks Brandon I'll keep my eye out for a BTA. Just noticed you live in Bellville, my folks live over in New Ulm/Industry which is pretty close to you.

if mine reproduces anytime soon, i'll let you know. He has a VERY nice pink foot and has short green tips.

They will host in Stichodactyla gigantea for sure and reluctantly in Stichodactyla haddoni. I've read they host in Stichodactyla mertensii but have no first hand experience with that.

All three of these anemones are called carpet anemones but S. haddoni is by far the most common in LFS.

Also, the captive bred one's require some coaxing to take to anemones usually.

My uncle's false clown pair are mating in a BTA.

Hope this helps. When they're mated I would assume their instincts kick in for them to find something to host with.

Thuy, I'm glad to hear the clowns are happy together in a BTA. I had those fish for more than four and a half years and feel a little pang of regret selling them, but I know your uncle is taking good care of them. I hope they produce swarms of babies for him. :) My chevron tang hovered constantly around their eggs and successfully raided every nest. :(

Do Clarke clowns host in a BTA? and is there a way to create a mated pair after one has been in the tank for a long time? I heard that if you put clowns in the tank by an odd number they will get along better is that true?

Rick, nothing could be further from the truth. in fact, 3 is the worst possible number of clowns you could keep. if two pair up, they'll try to kill off the odd one out.

you can try to pair up clowns, but you would have to introduce a new juvenile to the tank. if a clown has been alone (without other clowns) for awhile, it becomes female and can't change back. if you stick another clown of similar size or another female, they'll likely fight until you remove one (or until one dies). if you want, you can keep an eye out at LFS for a bunch of clarke clowns that are significantly smaller than yours and are kept together. then you'd want to choose one that isn't picking on the others.

I have 3 false clowns that I put into my tank at the same time when they were small. Now one is very large, another is medium and the last very small.

Maybe you can get away with having 3 ocellaris clowns since they are easy going but Clarke clowns tend to be aggressive.

I also have a tomato clown that dominates the other clowns(I want to get rid of it so that my ocellaris can mate but I can't catch the darn thing).
