I know you can run carbon in them, but theres much debate about running carbon 24/7 on reef tanks.

Any other use for them on reef tanks?

Other than running carbon, they're useful if you want to "polish" the water for any reason (sand storm, etc.).

Damn those impellers get loud though when they are polishing out sand.

you can also change the boxes out and put in bio-balls and a filter pad in it.
