I want to buy a new gun(pistol) and I need some input. I have had quite a few guns i.e. Glock, Springfield, and Kimber. I am currently shooting a Springfield XD .40 and I have a Pro Carry Kimber .45ACP. I am thinking another 1911 and thats where I would like some input. I have looked a STI, Para, and others but just can't make up my mind. Also, budget is around 1600 and under so no Wilsons or Les baer---I WISH---- but any incite would help. Thanks

I am not as well versed in firearms as my husband but the two I shoot on a regular basis is the Springfield and the Beretta 92fs. I love them both to be honest and prefer to keep the same size round for most of my guns though thats not always possible. For my carry piece I have a Makarov (for its size) but would rather carry 15-17 rounds instead of 7. I dont mean to muddy the decision making process worse by throwing in more options but it really just depends on what you are wanting it for.

The Springfield is beautiful, the Beretta had a large magazine, and the Makarov is most compact. It all depends on what I am wanting at that time on which one I chose to go with.

I was shooting a buddy's rock island armory 38 super 1911 the other day. I think that will be my next gun. In your price range you could buy two of them and a boat load of ammo. I have been hearing good things about the reliability of the RIA guns. Most of the complaints are from the wilson, les baer devotees complaining about there not being any of the refinements of those two. I was really surprised by the 38 super as well, nice shooting round.

I love kimbers. I've got a custom shop ultra carry 2 .45 with built in crimson trace laser grips, night sights, etc. For a compact it shoots very nice. I've got the rugger SR9c 9mm , shoots very well. My last purchase on a pistol was a FN five-seven. This thing shoots like a pellet gun. High velocity and spot on accuracy. The bullets are like mini riffle bullets, metal peircing. My wife likes it.

What are you looking to do with it? Are you looking for supreme accuracy?

For the money, I would look at getting a good deal on a used full size kimber or springfield. Then have it tuned with some new parts and a new barrel. Try to find something with a nice tight slide. You should also be able to find something gently used from wilson combat or sti in that price range.

As for the rock islands, they are decent guns but are not overly accurate or of the best quality. Almost everything on the gun is cast. You can definitely notice the subpar quality in the machining. Pretty good beaters guns though, definitely worth the money. I bought one of the "GI" models and upgraded just about everything on it. Fit a custom beavertail, new barrel, trigger job, etc...

Don't waste the money on a colt, they are not what they used to be and are no better than a cheaper kimber.

Like Dustin said, what do you want to do with it? I personally would not purchase a STI or Para.

for 1600 I would purchase multiple guns unless you just want something that looks pretty. All of my firearms were purchased with them being used in mind. No safe queens over here. I purchase my firearms knowing that they are going to get banged up, dropped, dirtied, and abused.

Also if you want to go to the range, i'd be happy to meet up haha.

Hey there, I'm a big gun guy and 1911 armorer. I used to shoot a Para P16-40 in IPSC back in the day, was a good gun, but Para is difficult to work with after the fact. They use off sized parts like grip screws that aren't interchangeable and they charge a premium. Used to be able to get them in the white and build them pretty cheap but last time I messed with it a couple years back parts were much more difficult to source then back in the 90's when I was hard core. Lots of competitive shooters run with STI, it's a good gun as well (and made in TX). You can usually pick up a used 1911 for a good price and swap out any parts that are worn and add to it what you want. The biggest question is if you want a double stack or single stack. Kimbers are awesome can't go wrong their either.

I actually had a buddy that picked up one of the cheap Tarus 1911's. It was crap out of the box but I spent a few hours on it polishing everything, adjusting springs and giving it a trigger job. It was a pretty sweet little shooter after that. But I'd only recommend it if you have a friend that's a gunsmith that will do it for free - was a few hundred dollars worth of work which would put you right back up with the more expensive guns. Then drop in a titanium hammer and sear and you're out a few hundred more.

Can't go wrong with the 1911! Though I do carry one of my Sigs for protection usually, not because they're better, but because they cost less and are lighter.

Ok I would like a Pistol that shoots dead ********* accurate. I have my concealed firearm the springfield XD and its not the most beautiful thing and I like that. I would not mind another Kimber as the one I currently own runs good and it has only jammed maybe 3 times out of 1500+ rounds.BUT it is a 4 inch barrel so I would not be opposed to a 5 inch as i know it will be a lot more accurate. Not only do I want a accurate gun but I want it to be kind of my showpiece. If I could find a gently used Wilson Combat I would be all over that or a Les baer.....basically, I want a looker/performer.

Fred i will take you up on that offer of going to the range especially once I 'pull the trigger' on this new gun lol...

I think that I would also prefer double stack over single

I know this will make Fred cringe ;) but if you want a double stack showpiece you'd be hard pressed to find something cooler then an STI competition rig with a full shroud. They shoot like a dream, though the tricked out ones can be pricey. To get a competition grade you'll be looking at close to 3k which is way over your budget. Other thing is competition guns can be really finicky. Hit the gun shows, you can usually get really good deals on gently used guns and get to wrap your hands around a couple before you pull the trigger.

http://www.stiguns.com/guns/USPSA-DS/USPSA-DS.php (competition)
http://www.stiguns.com/guns/Edge/Edge.php (more in your price range)
http://www.para-usa.com/new/product_pistol.php?id=12 (para but show piece/shooter it's not a bad deal and looks cool. Long as you aren't gun-smithing you wouldn't have a problem)

You can get most of those in .40, .45, .38 super or even 9 (though I can't imagine why). .38 Super is a slick round and what all the "Open" class comp guys use (souped up 9mm).

You of course couldn't really go wrong with a Les, Wilson, or Kimber as you already know

Check out the FN 5.7 Neat gun, around 1100

My favorite by far is the Sig p220 combat elite, or the HK USP .45 TACTICAL.

*cringe* lol Well if you want a show piece then you have some good choices. To be honest, guns for the most part are going to be as accurate as the shooter is. I can shoot same hole with a G23 as well as 1911s (even RIAs), sigs, etc. Have you thought about a Desert Eagle? I shot one a couple months back and I must say it was a hell of a round. Nothing you can't handle but it does give a nice kick. I also really liked my cousins Sig P220 Elite Stainless.

LOL I know its the Indian and not the arrow.... I really like the look of the STI 1911's I am going to the arms room tomorrow if I have time and check out what they have. Also, I have heard nothing but great things about Sigs so I think they are worth a look.

I already have a Kimber Pro Carry II and its awesome. I would not mind another possibly the Covert w/ crimson laser grip w/ 5 inch barrel. Since I have started this thread my buddy called me and is selling his Sig and he has it fairly tricked out. Gonna go Sunday and shoot a few rounds.

I like between 4-5lb but other than that tons of mods out there for them which would be kinda fun to mix and match and truly customize.

Yeah sigs are great. I love the weight on the elite stainless, it really helps with recoil as well although .45 doesn't have as much snap as .40.

Sure you don't want a rifle or shotgun? lol

I forgot the BOD members name that wears para cord bracelets. I'm sure he shoots as well..
