Brandon, are you sure you wouldn't rather have some of Jaime's peppermint shrimps? :p

Sorry, Sherri, for jacking your thread :D

Sherri,
I think she asked for numbers and she is getting all the letters. Here is mine.

I replaced the tubing for my unit so there are no blockages there.

The water going into my sediment filter, out of the sediment filter, into the carbon filter, and out of the carbon filter is full force -- jet stream. No pressure problems or blockages.

The RO water:wastewater ratio is dialed in at 1:4.

The water coming into the unit is about 200 PPM of TDS and out of the RO is 2 PPM.

The problem is that my unit is producing RO water at a rate of one gallon per 96 minutes, or 16 gallons per day. This is unacceptable as I replaced every single bit of media and my RO membrane just a few months ago. My unit is a 75 GPD unit.

*Sigh* I sent an email to Buckeye Field Supply, from whom I purchased everything. I'm awaiting his reply.

I think I'm going to run to my mom's house, get her RO membrane, and put it on my unit to make certain the membrane is what is the problem. See you cool cats later.

What is the water pressure in your house? Sometime due to low water pressure the membrane produce less water.

Sherri,

so you are saying it takes 96 minutes to get 4 gallons of waste water and 1 gallon of good water? That sounds really bad. Something definitely isn't right. Let us know what you find out about the membrane. Also Sherri when you put in the new cartridges did you flush the carbon etc before you ran the water through the membrane? If not maybe that fouled the membrane.

Yes, that's what I'm saying: 96 minutes of my unit running produces 1 gallon of RO and 4 gallons of waste water. 16 glorious gallons per day out of my 75 GPD-rated membrane.

I've had this RO unit since March of 2001 and have never flushed the carbon cartridge prior to installing it in the unit, and I have always had zero TDS until my DI resin became exhausted and then I would simply replace it (when it reached about 10 PPM). Apparently I was stupid to replace a perfectly fine RO membrane, but I really wanted to go from the 60 GPD membrane to the 75 GPD membrane.

Kevin, my water pressure is fine (although I don't have any numbers ;) ). The water shoots like a rocket from input to sediment filter to carbon filter to RO, and from the RO it just drips out. I even replaced the tubing from the carbon cartridge to the RO membrane a little while ago.

Sounds like the membrane is screwed....then since the restrictor is dialed in for a 4 waste to 1 good ratio it takes a long time to push the gallon of water through the membrane. Does your ro/di unit have any pressure guages on the unit. I bet the pressure is ungodly high due to the back up of water.

Where are you tapping off and getting your water? If I remember correct cold water will reduce flow a lot.

I'm tapped off cold water and our water pressure is low and I make more than 1 gallon per 96 minutes easy...something is definitely wrong.

make sure you test it first sherri to make sure that is the problem. A buddy of mine just got an RO/DI unit and the membrane was screwed on it too. But it was letting too much water through...TDS was near 200 ppm after sediment, carbon, and RO membrane...tested with a tds meter.

Like I said, I've had three and a half years with trouble-free operation (except when the carbon cartridge was the culprit that slowed down my unit's output several months ago)....tapped off the cold water line.

Buckeye Field Supply said it sounds as if I have mineral scaling on my RO membrane. It sure seems like this would have similarly affected the other reefkeepers in my area that I've talked to, but lucky for them, it hasn't.

It looks like Sherri gets to buy a brand new RO membrane to replace her four-month-old brand new RO membrane.
