I have a 90 gallon tank, I'm sick of having a syphon overflow and also sick of the green grass/algae that is spreading over my LR so in a week or 2, I'm going to drain my tank, get it drilled, and also try to figure out what to do about the green stuff.
Anyhow, my question is, is there a way to tell if the glass is tempered if I don't know the mfr?
Another question is, are they any larger tanks than 90 gallons that have the same length and width dimensions as a 90?

Thanks,
Jay

Most tanks of decent size will have tempered glass for the bottom panel.

A good way to find out is try to drill it. If it shatters in a million pieces, then you know it's tempered. :-x

Seriously, most manufacturers will sticker a tempered piece of glass. Maybe a glass place will have a test of sorts?? Good luck.

Try this website http://www.wetdryfilter.com/drilling_holes.htm, it is a local guy in houston that will actually come out an drill the hole for you and price includes drilling hole and bulkhead. But also on the web site you will see near the bottom of the drilling page an email from Oceanic that gives most of their tanks that have tempered bottoms, then right under that e-mail is a link to all-glass aquarium web site you can check this site as well to see of it is tempered. On top of drilling tanks he also makes custom overflows. So even if bottom of tank is tempered you can drill the back wall and get the same results just have a 3 sided overflow made. two sides would each hit one wall one being the back wall and one being the side, then the third side would be like a bottom to these two sides. If that was a little confusing just look around his site a little I think there is a picture of one. And right now his computer is down so if you would like a Phone number to contact him PM me.

I emailed him once about getting a 20 gallon tank drilled and he said I'd have to bring the tank to him.

This time you might tell him that it is a larger tank and it was set up, I know when I had mine done (180g) he was more than happy to come out and do it at my house, but I also had 4 holes drilled w/bulkheads installed, and I also bought the custom overflows from him which he also gladly installed for me. He does very good work!

I might be better off just finding a used RR tank because looking @ wetdryfilter.com, it is going to cost me a ton to have it drilled and an overflow installed.
I wanted to have a hole or 2 drilled for closed loop also.

This is why I asked if there are any larger gallon tanks with the same footprint as a 90 gallon.

Also, if I don't know if the bottom is tempered, is it safe to assume the sides aren't?
Is it more likely that the sides aren't tempered?

Can I have the holes drilled in the lower back of the tank, instead of the bottom and have it work the same?

Thanks,
Jay

Don't suppose anyone has a RR 90 gallon or 110 tall lying around not in use?

Does Aquatic Designs install overflows?

Jay ~

Yes, we do drill tanks and install overflows. Keith would likely be able to tell you the manufacturer of your tank once he's seen it. At this point he'd be able to determine if the glass is tempered or not.

Give Keith a call tomorrow at the shop and he can give you more details (pricing, schedule, etc.).

Thanks for your inquiry.
