I'm glad Aquacave has the $4.95 shipping. Sometimes I need non urgent misc. stuff and don't feel like driving 60 miles (round trip) to get it. So ordering from them takes a couple of minuts and it shows up at my door steps in 3-4 days.

Just an FYI in case you didn't know.

Here's the deal. I've been ordering my chemicals from Aquacave for a while now. I am tired of getting shafted at LFS. For example, I pay around $13 for Brightwell MicroBacter7. At any LFS that carries Brightwell it is over $18 and that is not including tax. I'm sick of it. I submit my order and get it 3-4 days later. It is awesomeness.

As a matter of fact, I am almost at the point of boycotting LFS that don't offer a MARSH 10% discount. I can't believe there is site sponsors that don't offer a MARSH discount. UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I'm somewhat opposite. I'm a firm believer in supporting our LFSs. The money I have saved on large ticket items from building a relationship with LFS owners far out weighs spending $3-4 more here and there on smaller items.

I don't mind them making money but sometimes the mark up is outrageous.

So I went to buy some flake food and the little jar I picked up was selling for $11.99 @ this one LFS, on the way home I decided to stop by Fish Land. The same little jar which I purchased about 30 minutes ago for $11.99 was $7.99 so I bought like 4 of them (It was the same weight/brand/type).

Go Fish Land. :bounce:

Aquarium World is definitely one of the worst. I was in there looking around recently because I have a gift card and they get some decent fish (the only thing priced ok). I was looking at their pumps. The same Rio+ pump at Marine Depot was $47 and at AW it was $79!!!! I understand that brick and mortar stores may not be able to charge as little as the big online retailers, but c'mon.

There are some others here in town that are high in prices as well not just Aquarium World.

I have not been to AW in a very long time. Last time I was there I was not impressed. The store was a mess and the livestock was sub-par, especially for the prices they were charging.
I dont mind paying a premium price if the livestock is very healthy, but not for drygoods.
The drygoods prices were very high as well and they would not price match other stores or internet.

I always give the LFS the first chance for my money.

True and..............true and even more true, some LFS rock and some don't.
But you can't have it both ways as some ppl want.
I shop and know my prices.
If I buy a skimmer at A LFS that is retail online $799 and I get it for $649 at the LFS cause I show my face every week, I'm not crying about some fish food that I have to pay a few bucks more than online.
Or getting good deals on livestock even without asking.
It's happening in my bussiness too as one builder gives me $XXX.000 on jobs per/year and a other builder only $xx.000, who you thinks get the best $5.00 sq/ft price?

I hate my phone sometimes! Sorry for the early send.

I have had a couple of rough experiences at local lfs, not naming names bc running a successful business is hard these days. I wasn't treated badly or anything, but honestly if someone comes into your store with questions, tells you they are new at this and they are ready and willing to buy what it takes to make if right....make time for that person! I will gladly pay a little more to a local store that has employees willing to take a minute to steer me in the right direction. I went to AW and while there was a definite mark up, there were three employees willing to discuss my issues with each other to help find the best, most cost effective solution. I wasn't impressed with the condition of some of the livestock, but I wasn't in the market for any so it didn't matter. My kids loved the store though. My son has special needs and had about a hundred questions for a girl who was cleaning the tanks and she was very patient and answered him thoughtfully. You don't find that online.

A few dollars make a huge difference when you are in the hobby for a long time.

You dont understand the true cost of reefing because you been in the hobby for a very very short time.

My original post was to just inform others. I ain't worry about a couple of dollars and crying about it.

Where did you get your info from dude?
Cause I'm a rookie on Marsh doesn't mean that I'm a rookie in the aquarium world.
And btw my post was not directed at you in general.
If it was I would copy your first post in there.

My personal experience is that VERY few lfs I have visited have impressed me the first time I go. It has only been after a few trips and conversations/transactions with the staff that people really begin to open up. The only exception for me was Don. He was welcoming and helpful and I had his complete attention from the moment I got there. Of course, his business is in his house, so that has to limit the distractions while you have a customer. I never write anyone off after one visit. I've worked retail before, occasionally everyone has a bad day.
