I bought two tanks over the $1 gallon sale at Petco a week ago. The first tank is a 29 gallon. The second one is a 40 breeder. I'm getting mixed answers from people on which panel is tempered. Some say the sides are while others say that the bottom is. Anyone buy one of these tanks and tried drilling them or has a definite answer?

Drilling on sides should be fine. Glass is thin. Not to use too much pressure or it would crack from the hole.

I've drilled the sides of two of the 29 gal tanks, and I know people have drilled the sides of 40b tanks also. You can check the glass to see if it is tempered by using a computer or cell phone screen and polarized glasses. There are videos on youtube about how to do it.

I'm 95% sure that non of the panes are tempered. According to a PDF from Aqueon, the bottoms of these tanks are not temperd. I just wanted additional 1st hand info/experience.

I bought the exact same tank (40gal) from the exact same retailer(Petco).

30min later I was @ city pets having them drill the bottom pane. Ask for 'Donnie'.

Drill away. The bottom is NOT tempered. I still have the original receipt & pictures of the drilling process.

Thanks for the late reply, but I made the call to Aqeon's and got teh confirmation that these two tanks are drill-able in any glass pane. I drilled the 30 gal last week. All went well.
