I know there are a hundred different answer's to my question but.. I am curious about how much magnesium I could I expect my tank to use? I have about a 90 gallon tank and about a 10 gallon sump, what I would consider I light to moderate load(most everything is frag size maybe slightly larger), about 60-70lbs LR.

hey man, you would be surprised as to how much your small frags will soak up. i have to really stop buying frags as what i have is suckig up my calcium and alk. i would say, get yourself a good test and check it now. then also check your cal and alk. your cal and alk will do more fluctuaing then your mag. in a perfect world,if your mag is in sync then it should keep your others in check. i would then ceck it in about 4 days to see if it has dropped. mine would drop from say 1420 to 1400 in a week, but them again its my tank. hope this sort of helps...

I don't have any answers for you, but can confirm that a drop from 1360 to 1160 in 4 days is unusual. MG is something you really only need to dose every couple/few weeks. Alk and Cal can fluctuate a lot without dosing and a lot of corals/clams, but your MG should be a much slower drop. I dropped from 1420 to 1360 in a month in my tank. With your Alk and Cal being in line there must be something else in play.
If you don't hear you might also check the chemistry forum on ReefCentral. Some industry gurus hang out there.

Absolutely no coraline, if the test results are correct that is a drop of about 50ppm per day! Could this simply be my uptake it seems a bit much to me? I will test my parameters again i a little while.

that's a ton of mg in a day, get someone else to test your water just to be sure that's accurate

Nothing strips mag outta the water like that. Althought coraline does take some mag out, it uses up alk/calc up a lot faster. I think you got a wonky test kit.

Check its consistency, then cross check with a different test kit to see if the first one was accurate. I know this sounds kinda dumb, but re-read the instructions. For whatever reason, mag kits have always been a PITA to use. I know I was doing it wrong for a while before I caught myself.

Actually, I have had that problem myself. Never did figure out what was using mag up so fast! Test kit was accurate, if I read 1200 I would dose the calculated amount of BRS magnesium to raise it to 1300 and the kit would read 1300. 2 days later back to 1200. I also used the test kit to test my newly made Salinity saltwater, it would read within 15ppm of the mag value posted on the outside of the bucket for that batch. It was really weird!

was it in a fairly new tank? I ask because for the first few months i had my tank set up I had a similar problem and had to dose frequently to maintain 1300

No, I'd been up for at least a year prior. Just hadn't been measuring mag, only started because some of my LPS were looking bad.

I have had a long history of dealing with low magnesium. Mine was suuuper low for the first year, like 600-700. !@! I bought another test kit and it read about the same. the reef calculator said that I would need to add 3 or 4 bottles of Tech M to my 34 gallon. this seemed Nutz. I also would dose a bunch, and it would rise somewhat, but then would fall again.

The second test kit came with a reference solution. It tested right on. I investigated using solid magnesium hexahydrate and found that it was a reasonalbe cost. The shocking thing, is that a 50 gallon tank may have 6 pounds of magnesium dissolved in its saltwater. !! That's a lot.

I never understood why mine was sooo low. I asked on reef central, and unfortunately, everyones explanation was along the lines of... that's impossible. You are doing something wrong. There is no way... In other words, if they couldn't understand how it could happen, then it must not be happening. Kind of an arrogant attitude when you step back and look from afar.

I ended up using the reef calculator and found that 212 grams of mg would theoretically raise my 50 gallon volume by about 100 ppm. I weighed it out, adn that's exactly what it did. Over a few weeks, I brought it up to about 1,400 ppm. At one point, it dropped about 200 points in about 2 weeks. Impossible, they said.... I dosed it again, and it has been fairly stable since.

I say believe your test kit. To be sure, read your instructions and follow them. Also, test against a reference soln if you have one. Then calculate it and dose it up to where it needs to be. A super elevated mg level, if you are wrong will not hurt much anyways, I bet. They do it to treat bryopsis.

Use the force....

For those who may be interested this is just an update of the situation. I have spoken to the gurus of wetwebmedia.com, for those who don't know of
wetwebmedia.com it is a website that is managed by authors, industry hatchers, marine biologist and the like. People such as Bob Fenner, Anthony Calfo,
Eric Borneman and many more respond to our questions. This is what one had to say about my Magnesium situation. They did decide to post this on their website. This is my first attempt to post a link hope it works. The second message to them has been updated on their website hope this helps.

Finally, people who believe my heavy magnesium consumption! So many just dismissed it as impossible, I got tired of bringing it up.
