 My main pump went out this afternoon when I fired it back up after a water change. It was a good pump, and gave its whole life for my tank for the last four years. I will give it a proper burial (wing it over the top of the dumpster behind my offices).

I called Aquarium World for a price quote on a Mag Drive 1800, which retails for $214.00. They're just three miles away and I thought, what the heck, let's see if they have what I need in stock and what the price might be.

I was told after a lengthy wait while the gal clicked away on her calculator that I could buy it for $250 plus tax. Holy cow. Far OVER suggested retail! :-o

Then I called Aquatic World... about the same distance. I won't buy any fish from them because they always die in a week or less, but I really need a pump this afternoon so I called. $179 plus tax. That's better... at least it's not full tilt retail or above.

So, I decided to call one of my favorite LFS for their incredible prices... City Pets. The same pump was $130 plus tax. Wow. That's what buying it online costs when I included the "extra heavy shipping surcharges".

I am off to City Pets to pick up my pump and get my tank flowing again. :p

Before you buy any dry goods from Aquarium World, do check around and you'll find that they're hiking up prices well above retail. I guess someone's gotta pay for that big shark tank and the two story waterfall.

I owuld call AW back and tell them what price CP has the SAME pump for. Ask them if they would meet CP price and see what they say.

I would do this only to rub it in on them. Unless they actually met CP price, then you could shoot over to buy it.
