I want to add a refugium to my 55 gal. I would like some opinions on whether to use a HOT overflow, to a below tank refugium, or maybe go with a HOT refugium, like the ones CPR makes. My main concerns with using the HOT overflow is the possibility of flooding, but I would be able to have more water volume, as compared to a HOT refugium. Are the HOT refugiums as beneficial as opposedto haveing one under the tank with more water volume? Another plus to having one under the tank is I could plumb my skimmer before the refugium, thus removing my Remora out of the tank, giving me more room. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

a sump-style refugium is a very nice thing to have, especially if you can conceal it in a stand.

You can put your skimmer on it, pour make up water in it and not kill your back, and you don't have to have your tank so far from the wall on which it resides.

It's also a great place to add your supplements.

What I like most about mine is that I have a little pump and some hose that I drop into my sump and I can easily drain out enough water to do a water change and it's all done down low.

Just my .02 cents worth.

I currently have both and would have to agree. Below the tank also allows you to tend to the fuge better and see what's happening in it better

I currently have a 55 with a hob overflow, 20 gal. sump style fuge, and wouldn't change it for anything. The sump is hidden and easy to work on.
