Hey all,

We went into a dive/scuba shop on Westheimer this weekend and looked at equipment. We have decided to get certified in Hawaii and need to purchase 2 dive masks, 2 snorkels and 2 pairs of fins.

Where would you recommend in Houston for good equipment at reasonable prices? We looked at fins in this shop we stopped in and they were 100-200 per pair, seemed high to me?

Diver's Paradis (I think that's the name) is a good "Local" shop for Clear Lake / Friendswood. They have a wide selection of equipment and reasonable prices.

"Sport Divers" is another EXCELLENT shop, but their equipment selection is not quite as expansive (but their sales staff is a little less creepy).

Both are on I-45 South just South of Nasa Road 1. Sport Divers is on the "Hooters" side of the highway, "Diver's Paradise" is on the Movie Theater side of the highway....

Ordering online is often a good way to save money....But only if you know your size in a particular piece of equipment. These guys don't have their basic certs yet, so it's unlikely that they know which brand/style/model mask fits them correctly, or what size they'll need for a particular brand of fin/skin/etc...

Unfortunately this is another expensive hobby. What I did when I decided to upgrade some of my gear was I read reports/recommendations on scuba boards, and reviews in scuba diving magazine, and picked out some of the top scoring gear that was mid-level pricewise then I went to the shops and tried it one. I made note of what I liked in what size then I got online and checked to see if I'd save money. I did in fact order most of it online, but there were a few things that were very similarly priced locally so I spent money with a couple of the shops as well.
