Going to start making my salt. Just wanted to know if anyone recommended a certain mix or doesn't like one. Any input is good input. BTW, anyone tried the PETCO brand?

If you ask 10 people your going to get 9 different opinions. Some mix some use higher end. FIrst you have to figure out what you want to keep/are keeping research what the best parameters are for that type of tank, then figure out which salts or combinations there of give you the best results. I like the results of Aqua Vitro salinity on an SPS tank, I just dont like the way it mixes. I am starting the new system with Oceanic since it has pretty good parameters and mixes pretty clear.

Saw a rescent article on reef central about a fish shop in Germany. All the guys tanks the sps would blow you away. The pics were amazing. He said his trick was that he used 3 different major brands of salt and rotated them. Couldnt argue his success have started doing it myself. I use reef crystal, intant ocean and Tropic marine 10% every other weekend. Could see this might be impossible if you dont use that much salt

true what Jason said. i personally use Red Sea Pro. It mixes fast and you almost have to scrap the mixxing tub about every third mix. it leaves for potential flakes for the next batch.

I've used red sea coral pro and salinity. Both work well and have good numbers but I like how quickly the coral pro mixes while salinity takes a lot longer. I've got a bucket of salinity right now and I'll probably just bounce back and fourth between the two after reading what reeftopia mentioned.

I know this has zero bearing on anything but the bucket from salinity is the bomb and is probably the reason it costs more than the others

I use Red Sea Coral Pro and love it. I do have to clean my mixing tank every couple months because of the residue that builds up. When Petco had that big sale on salt I bought 3 buckets and have been mixing 1/2 and 1/2 RSCP and it. My parameters are good and my coral seems to not mind. I may keep mixing after these 3 buckets are gone to save a little. I haven't decided yet.
