Does anyone know if a Blu Ray DVD will play on a regular dvd player just at a lower quality?

Nope, it uses a different frequency laser than the older DVD so it won't work.

I'm getting one for christmas from my parents, just wondering if I can buy a few new dvd's now and watch them w/ poorer quality until I get the new player.

Its the same for me. I rarely play any game. I think a decent Blueray player is ~200 and you can get a ps3 on sale for about ~300. I use Tversity to stream media to the ps3 also. I recently bought Super Street fighter 2 to play with some friends/online thats all.

It's really a great package with the blu-ray! I don't play much either but when I do I am glad I bought it!
