Does anyone have one of these or know much about them. I got one from GARF about a year ago and never have heard much on them. Looks a lot like a baby blue montipora. Really nice looking corals.

I was sent a frag by accident from Garf two years ago. It grew really slow and turned the wierdest black/blue color, with white lines. I have never seen one like it since. But yes its a Montipora Cap. type coral. The whole thing is they are rare and frags are ususally expensive. Take care of it and see how it grows. I lost mine when my chiller controller decided to catch fire. It was a sad day for man kind     .

Thanks for the info-it has actually grown a lot faster since I put more flow on it.

Hi Kyle, this coral is called echinopora lamellosa, aka blue chalise coral. This particular coral was made famous by Steve Tyree in california. You can find out all about it at www.reeffarmers.com or www.dynamicecomorphology.com This coral is a very sweet coral and is reported to be a super slow grower. If you're getting better growth then thats awesome. It is also a coral that is hard to keep the sky blue coloration on. Some keep it low and even in the shade and still have a hard time keeping the blue.

HTH....

This is unusual because I am by no means an expert with this hobby and mine is about as sky blue as it can get and growing great. It at the highest point in the tank directly under VHO and Halides. Thanks for the info.

Kyle, you don't have to be an expert to grow sps corals. You're giving this coral what it needs to grow and that's all it takes. This coral just happens to be one of the not so easy to keep sps corals, so congrats!!!

The coral on John's exoticreefs site, while he calls it a chalise is not a echinopora. The surface is bumpy while the true echinopora is somewhat smooth. I think his is an echinophyllia. This coral is also on the www.reeffarmers.com website.

It's like they are alike but different. This is once instance it helps to know the scientific name compared to the common name.
