If the coral is happy that low in the tank then yes you could prop it up in the sand. The amount of time you leave your lights on is up to you and your electric bill :) I run my actinics for 10 hrs and my halides for 8 hours.

Actinics are good for making the corals look pretty. Due to the restricted PAR output of most actinics, they are marginal as coral growers.

I little trick you can try if you want to put your branching hammer in the sand is to cut a short length (4-6 inches) of PVC pipe the correct diameter for your needs, stick it into the sand, and then put the stem of the hammer into it. That way it won't fall or get knocked over, and when it's all out during the day, it will camoflouge the PVC to where you won't see it. I have several candy corals placed this way. I ended up having to put them on the bottom because my lights were too strong for them where they were originally placed.

well orginally i had it in the sand but i didnt look good so i put it up higher to get more light. I have since upgraded my lights for 24watts to 110 and didnt want to give it to much. Right now it (tenticlaces?) thingys are real fat and looks great.
