Okay, I am going to Europe at the end of May, I am really wanting to take my camera (Sony 828), but I think I should bring a more compact one for the trip.

I one that has good quality pics, as well as a the capability for high storage/easy to transfer pics to computer.

Any ideas?

Are you going to be taking a computer to transfer them too?

I'd make a list of 2-3 in your price range that are the size you like, then I'd check out www.dpreview.com. You can do a side-by-side comparison of the models that you're looking at. I'd try to stick to models that use compact flash or SD, cards, just because they tend to be a bit cheaper.

Then you should be good with a couple 128mb or 256mb cards, that you can swap out. That way while one is dumping to the computer you can still be taking shots. I did fine for quite awhile with two 128mb cards, then bought two 256mb cards. It's pretty easy to fill them up. I filled up the two 256 cards this weekend taking pics of my friends on our camping trip. That's nearly 450 pics or so over the course of the weekend. I deleted a huge chunk, but still had 300 or so that weren't bad. Out of those I had probably a dozen that I really liked.

I'd try to look at cameras that take AA batteries. Rechargeable AA batteries, and a couple chargers for them are cheap, and they last MUCH longer than regular AA's. In a pinch/emergency regular AA batteries are pretty much available everywhere as well, which is nice.
I mention this because two weekends ago I had a ton of friends in from out of town for a wedding, and several had digital cameras. Everyone was shooting lots of pics of all the pre-wedding parties, and then the setup and the wedding itself. I saw more than one person that had a camera with some type of proprietary battery have to stop shooting because they were out of juice. Those types of batteries, and chargers for them are expensive.

i like canon cameras. good interface/user friendly and great pictures. older models use compact flash(cheap nowadays to buy). newer models use sd cards.

a75, a85, a95 A410(replaces a75) or A520(replaces a85) use AA and have good reviews. they all have manual mode options which come in really handing for more advanced photography.

This one looks pretty good....It's running about $280 at best buy. It's 4.0MP, which is generally good for printing to 4x6 or so. If you want to print much above that you probably want 5MP or more. Although you can get decent 8x10 prints with less than that if you've composed the pic well. If you're mainly going to be using it for online stuff, then it doesn't really matter much. You could probably get it a bit cheaper buying it online...Just be careful to find a reputable online dealer, there are several scams going with digital products online.

Here's a 5.0MP that's about the same price...I'm not sure about the white balance settings on it, but several of the other fujis in this line will let you set it manually.

Just a quick look at best buy's website and looking up ones that might work on dpreview.

they have links to most other professional reviews. you can definitely get the a85 for much cheaper online from places like buydig and others with no sales tax or even from dell.

We just picked up a Kodak DX7590 yesterday. It doesn't have the manual white balance, but according to dpreview.com it has a very good automatic white balance, and I saw some pictures from one on RC and the color looked very good, so I'm optimistic.

The best feature of this camera is that it has a 10x OPTICAL zoom. Digital zooms are worthless, and most cameras are limited to 3x-4x optical zoom, so this is a really cool feature.

This thing takes great pictures and is very easy for my wife to use, yet it lets you override everything (well, except the white balance) manually, so I should be able to fidget with it to get the shots I want.

It was $418 from Sam's and has a $50 mail in rebate. I also picked up a 512 MB memory card for $50 which holds over 200 pictures in regular quality mode and 150 pictures in the highest quality mode.
