i am thinking about building a nano for a frogfish...i am wondering if it would be a bad idea to drill the tank for the intake and output of a canister filter below the water line more like a closed loop to get a cleaner appearance then having the hoses hang over the side...

its a sealed system so it wont siphon or anything, but a leak in the canister seal or hose could be disastrous...

what you guys think?

Considering that the intake would be below the waterline anyway, I don't see how having the return below the waterline as well would make a leak-situation worse? I believe that in both cases water would drain until it falls below the holes?

In worse case scenario..... too much pressure build up in the canister resulting in a leak.

alright another question, dont see a need to start another thread...

does anyone know how much LUMINOUS INTENSITY(mcd) a typical like 150 watt DE metal halide bulb gives off?? i am considering making my own LED lighting but i dont know how much mcd to shoot for.

Intensity can't be increased by adding more bulbs. For example: an NO fluorescent bulb isn't going to be able to "punch" through 24" of light and keep a crocea alive, and adding more NO bulbs isn't going to change the situation.

Probably hundreds if you compare to the Solaris.....I mean they spent the money to test the stuff and if they are gonna use a ton of them who's to say that they can achieve anything remotely the same with less?

the smallest fixture they make is 24" and it only has 50 LED's...so i dont think thats too bad... looks like all their fixtures have 25 LED's for every 12" of aquarium

this is taken from their website

each led has it own reflector etc. etc. good luck trying to find those parts. in regards to the canister filter, have you looked at ADA type attachments they use them for freshwater and are made of glass.

good call...but im still thinking i want to avoid anything hanging over the edge....

and this is all i could find for reflectors..says they will fit snugly on a 5mm LED and are only $.50 a piece

but the LED's im looking at have a 120* view angle, so i wonder if that reflector would give the spotlight effect that alot of people have problems with on their DIY moon light setups..
