Would like to buy a macro for my Canon Xsi and trying to decide between the 60mm and 100mm ( both f2.8 ) While I think the 100mm is the better macro, it seems heavier (I like not having to use a tripod) and I want to be able use as an all round lens when possible.

Also has anyone used a Tamron macro?

Any feedback is appreciated!

Thanks

If you are wanting to take true macro pics I would go with the 100mm. I use nikon so I can't comment on the quality of the canon lens. I do have the tamron 90mm macro for nikon. It is a very common and highly rated lens for the price. People use it for portraits and macro shots. Even at 90-100mm you may want to look at the kenko extension tubes if you want to get really close.

As an all around lense the 100mm is great where you have room but can really limit you indoors. Agree that the 100 would be a better macro lense all things being equal.

Thanks for the feedback - think I'm going to check out the 100mm and see how it feels.

I have the 60mm on my 60D and have no complaints. I was in the same boat as you trying to decide but I went with the 60mm. I looked at the other brand macros however the cannon just focus so much faster than the others. Some of the other did not have a manuel focus over ride another must for me. Just my 2 cents.
