I wouldn't advise putting a clean up crew in a nanocube's back compartments. However, you could remove the cheato, shake it out in some tap water and put it back in.

The above is the best solution. Detritus builds up on cheato over time and that slows down the water flow; not enough water movement in that chamber causes the algae to appear. You could stick a small pump in there for extra circulation.

thanks for all the help guys. I actually added a pump a while back. occasionally I take out the chaeto and rinse it off.
