About the worst thing someone can have happen is to have a mass clam spwning in our reef systems. Barry of Clamsdirect has talked about it in length at our forum. There are several people that I know via the boards that have had clams spawn and the mess to clean up afterwards is a mess. As to whether it killed the fish I don't remeber any of the others having any fish die off.

Since Jim is no longer in the clam business I wish we could get Barry Neigut to come to a meeting. Jim is like any of us now in keeping his reef tank but no longer in the clam business.

Are you talking about Jim Norris in Austin? When did he get out fo the clam business? What prompted this? He was a great speaker at our meeting last year, and I was trying to get in touch with him to get him in to talk to us again this year.

Jim, Hi...Jim Norris has been out of the clam business since before he spoke to us at the meeting last year. He's in heavy in sps now although he is not making that a business. He's just keeping a reef tank just like us now. I don't know what provoked him to get out but Barry was getting big into the clams and Jim just kind of quit selling and importing them. They are friends so it's not like one ran the other out of business.

It's funny cause I thought back at that meeting why was Jim N. there to talk about clams when he isn't in the business anymore. Obviously he still has his clam knowledge.

The difference between what happened to Barry and what happened to me is that he actually saw it happen in his system (and actually took pictures) and was able to take immediate action. I think my event happened sometime Saturday Morning and I didn't notice it until about 3:00pm that afternoon....possibly about 5 or 6 hours after the event.

It is known that when a clam spawns, the gametes consume a great deal of dissolved oxygen. In such a small space, even a 180 gallon tank, these free floating gametes will consume most of the dissolved oxygen thereby suffocating the animals that require the most oxygen first. Note that the two fish that did survive this event were some of my smaller, less active fish....a Bangaii Cardinal and a Galveston Blenny. All of the active swimmers and larger fish were dead by the time I found out that something was wrong.

I am sure that if I had noticed it happen, and had had the means that I ended up using on hand, I probably would not have lost anything.

Oh, well....I will know better next time (I hope that there never is a next time though).

The month before he talked to us, I went to a MAAST meeting at his house in Round Rock, and he discussed clams there, along with showing us his import stock tanks which were full. I know he is not in the retail business, but I do still think that he imports and wholesales.

I hope I get in touch with him and find out. He was a great speaker and I would like to have him here again.

His stock tanks are now for frags of his sps corals. Jim came to Houston to visit me back right before Christmas and we talked and he brought me some things and he is not into clams anymore. He kept Scar, the derasa that he talked about dropping and a couple of other small clams but that is it. His gigas he donated to SeaWorld in San Antonio.

He posted pics on maast a while back doing a lighting study between 20k XM, 10k XM, and that is about all those tanks in his garage are for now. He got tired of going to Dallas.

Jim is a great guy and I always look forward to seeing him talk. I've known him for close to 3 years now.

On the subject of Jim

I was at his house in the fall, sometime around oct if I remember correctly. And he had a huge tank with 4 or 5 400watters hanging over it, and that seemed to be the only tank in operation. He talked baout his past tanks, but he was just running the one sps operation.
VERY NICE guy, and we swapped some Monti cap peices with each other. He was very open to me coming by and interupting his day. I was grateful to his hospitality, and his green monti cap is finally showing some purple color to the growth edge, and is eally putting on some size. I thought it would never start to grow...
If we have a chance to have him as a guest speaker I would give that idea two thumbs up!

That reef tank is Jim's 240g sps tank. He is who "helped" me decide to try the XM hamlids as we talked about them a lot when he was here for that meeting. He uses 6 400w mix of 10k and 20k over his tank. My plating montipora from him is doing fine. It is acclimating to my XM's albeit in 250wattage.

Jim is a super nice guy and always willing to help someone out. Others may not be as eager but Jim is always eager to help. I count him as one of my good buddies.
