My wife and I are looking at buying a house in El Lago off of Nasa 1 and are wondering who still insures out there. I have heard that it can be tough to find insurance for that area. Does anyone in the area know of a company to go to for a coastal area? Thanks.

As far as I know...Nationwide, Allstate, and StateFarm are all still writing policies out this way. I have Allstate. and used to have Nationwide. PM me if you want agent names.

Hey we are trying to buy in that area too!! Which house are you looking at? We just put in a bid for one today.

Allstate and Statefarm no longer insure directly, but use other companies for their home owner's policy (I am planning on using one or the other for my flood and mortgage disability policies, as well as our car insurance). Statefarm will only write a policy for home owner's if you had a car insurance policy with them as of Sept 1st, unfortunately having a renter's policy doesn't count. I would like to check with Nationwide though.

Oh yeah, be sure to check the flood plain map before buying. Luckily, the house we want is in the 500-year flood plain, so the flood insurance will only be about $264 per year.

I think a lot of companies are switching to the texas state windstorm coverage (clearly for windstorm) in this area, which is going to cost some money. It's my understanding that Allstate and Statefarm and others will continue to write theft, fire, etc., but you will have to get separate policies for windstorm and flood. However, most companies will continue to set-up those policies for you and you make one payment, its just that it seems to be more expensive and confusing.

well i got in touch with my insurance company (allstate) and they told me what yall have been saying. they will provide the regular homeowners, as well as flood insurance, but the state provides the windstorm. however she did say that they write the windstorm policy and it is in one payment so hopefully it will be a little less confusing. thanks for the responses.

Looks like we will be finalizing our contract. I got quotes from Allstate, which were reasonable prices for the area. The only thing that will "get" you is the flood plain.

the house is also in the 500 year flood plain so we should be paying 264 as well.

Good deal. Also, since you are west of 146, you will have wind and hail included in your home owner's policy.
