One topic that I have not seen discussed is overal coral size. When planning the layout and placement of corals how do you know how much space and headroom to give them? I will mostly be keeping softies and leathers.

I don't/didn't plan that much ahead. I did lots of research as to what fish I wanted, and what corals I could keep, with my lights and the fish I wanted, but didn't really look at how big a coral is likely to get. If there was one particular coral that I really liked above all others and wanted to make it a center piece of the tank I suppose it would be a bit different, but really I just find pieces that I like at the LFS and buy it. I've only had to rearrange rockwork a bit to fit them a couple times, and it was all pretty minor stuff, just moving a few pieces of fist-sized rock and it fit fine. There are several pieces that I've seen that looked beautiful, but simply wouldn't fit in my tank. Obviously I didn't get them and try to cram them in.

Most corals will just grow and grow; they will get as big as you let them. So if you want to fit them in a certain place you just have to frag them from time to time.

Some of the leathers can get big, so you might want to see some to see what you expect.
With me, I am mostly LPS and SPS, so I don't worry to much about it, for the LPS are growing slow, and the SPS well when they finally have no more room, it will be fragging time.
