Anyone using one of these? I am setting up a 55G reef and after looking at skimmers till I am blue in the face I like this one the best out of the HOB skimmers.

Check out the "Reef Octopus BH 800S Hang
on Back Protein Skimmer ", for a similar price and I think it will be a much better skimmer. Bubble plate, included mesh mod wheel and pin wheel so you can tweak it if you want, sicce pump and its an octopus. If price isn't of much conscern, the reef ocotopus extreme line of HOB skimmers is insanely good, but quite a bit more pricey. Comparing the cpr HOB, I think even the eschopps psk-75 would be comparable at about half the price. I myself have done a TON of research on skimmers over the past few years, and honestly have seen VERY few reviews on the cpr skimmers..ie.. not that popular. Just my 2 cents :)

Thanks for your input Slayer!
I agree, reviews of the CPR line before this unit were marginal at best and had one of the earliest versions back in the early/mid 90’s that was also marginal. I managed to hook up with a few people that are running this on RC and pulled the trigger on it Tuesday.
I did look at the Octo units as well as the Eschopps and chose the CPR over these for a few reasons:

Cost: $180 was hard to pass up in comparison. (I know, if it ends up a paperweight I will be on the hook for something else) The Eschopps was actually very attractive from a function/cost standpoint but could not shake the thought of the external pump being a problem. Murphy's Law tends to hover over me like a dark cloud so I excluded it from the short list.

Size: The tank side foot print is very small. The unit came in last night and it is completely hidden behind one the Koralia Evo 1050's.

Contact Time: I like the concept of a small feed pump from the tank and a second pump producing bubbles. Although I am a little concerned with the pumps used in this setup and may have to mod it using better pumps down the line. One of the shy away moments for me with the Eschopps was the external pump attached to the bottom of the unit. I am sure that it is securely attached but Murphy's law always tends to hover over me like a dark cloud.

What I found confusing as all get out in my search is that there are almost equal positive and negative reviews on most all HOB skimmers unless you go the Deltec or Warner route which are past the line of what I am willing to pay for now. I was really interested in the Bubble-Magus BMQQ and would have purchased it above all others if it were available.

Sounds good, good luck. I checked out a video of the aeroforce and it worries me the ammount of turbulance in the reaction chamber, bubbles didn't seem able to form a foam head very well because the bubbles were actually being drawn back down into the reaction chamber from all the turbulance. Hope yours doesn't have this problem.

Ahhhhh.... I see what you mean. I went back and looked at the vid again.

Looks like there may even be a dead spot at the top left hand area as well due to turbulence. I will have to take a closer look at the impeller to see if there is room for improvement.
