Hello Everyone,

As concern for the Earth's reef systems seems to be increasing, I'm starting to pay more attention to obtaining stock that does not "harm" existing reefs. I'm wondering if anyone has any references to aquacultured suppliers or reef friendly suppliers. So far the references I have are:
Dr Foster's Smith (inventory stock must state tank raised or aquacultured)
http://www.reefscience.com/
http://www.garf.org/

Any recommended additions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I believe a number of MARSH members would add the following tank-raised things to the list:

Aptasia
Hair algea
Bubble Algae

I don't have the first two right now (thank God!) but if anyone wants some bubble algae, I have all you want, just come get a fist full of it.

I'm cornering the market in tank-raised bubble algae and planaria myself.

Nice list but just because those animals have been captivly bred it doesn't mean they are commercially availble. For example some of those clowns listed there are a lot of people that would be excited to get their hands on them but they are hard to get WC let alone TR. I am not sure about the dotty backs. With gobies the neon is readily available tank raised and I have heard of commercial breeding of yellow watchmans. As far as snails hermits and conches I think there are enough in the ocean for the reefs and our tanks. I don't think you'll see TR pepermint shrimp anytime soon at your LFS you can pull them out of Galveston 100s at a time.

My take on the whole ecological thing:
Try to get frags as much as possible. I hate to know how many SPS colonies die on the way to the LFS.
If you buy a WC fish make sure you give it a long and happy life.
In the ocean you will not find a clownfish with out an anenome and anenomes need clowns to avoid predation. If possible buy TR Clowns and Cloned BTAs.

Almost every Ocellaris clown you see is TR and correct me if I am wrong most of the Fiji LR in our area is aqua-cultured Walt Smith. Most your clams are also TR.
