Hey Guys , Saturday I ran across a deal could not pass up , I now have another 90 gallon tank with center overflow , came with a Odyessea T5 fixture with two metal halides and eight LED moonlights , going to set up another tank but have heard Metal Halides need to run for limited times during the day and is better to have a glass top on tank are just open and no tops.

Those odysea lights don't need a glass top though it would be preferred to have a screen to linage salt spray. If it is a newer fixture with the black ballasts, they aren't terrible lights if you replaCe the bulbs with a Phoenix.

I believe it is an older fixture , but the ballast are ice cap ballast and yes the bulbs and lens covers probably need replacing , does evaporation increase a lot with open top tank. And would I need to run some fans with those lights I hear they run pretty warm.

Yes and yes. When you run a fan across the surface of the water, it induces evaporative cooling. You will want to run an ATO to keep parameters stable. The ice cap ballasts are great! I have replacement glass for the covers if you need them.

Thanks , but I am not sure I am going to use them yet , I also have an Artic T247 LED that was part of that deal I would just have to buy one more for coverage, I have to get my first tank under better control before I do another , I keep having Nitrates get up in the 20's and not sure what to do.

Better nutrient export! If you put it in, you have to take it out! If you have a refugium and a good skimmer and its not working, you have a nutrient trap somewhere. Let us know what your filtration looks like, what your bio load is, and how much you feed.

I do have an Eshopps R200 refugium , also a reef octopus Nt 150 skimmer, a GFO reactor , but I am not sure you know the history , there are 6 fish , several mushroom corals , I am not sure you know the history of tank , it is only a month old bought with all of the livestock , broke it down and moved it about 80 miles a set it back up , change the sump out we set it back up only had a wet dry trickle when purchased and I did reuse as much of the water as could save and did reuse substrate. Thanks for your help

Look for dead spots in the tank. If there is not enough water flow, the detritus will settle in the low flow pockets where it will rot. Make sure your rockscape is open and you have appropriately sized and placed powerheads.
