fishing

My husband and I went fishing a few days ago at San Luis Pass. If you take a left before the bridge and follow the dirt road towards the water you're not as likely to get stuck. I waded out about thigh deep under the bridge and fished around the bridge columns. I got 3 decent black drum. My husband waded a little farther out (he was fishing for shark) and he caught about 10 big gafftop. I have heard the redfish are good there also, but didn't get any that day. I like it there because it is a very sandy bottom, it's easy wading and the waves are very small. Hope this helps!

be careful when you wade out in san luis pass those currents out there a unpredictable and have claimed a few wade fishermen out there over the years. its a great place to fish but would not wade out too much.

thanks for the input, it all helps!

im actually from california and havent ever fished the texas coast before. i tell ya what though, it looks alot funner than the pacific coast! :D

i was talking to a guy here in austin on friday and he was telling me a few things that had me concerned... i personally like to wade, as a matter of fact i spent all day wading out at decker lake today, but thats beside the point. what he told me was that on the texas coast, you can fish the bay side of the islands or the gulf side. he said the good side for wading the flats would be on the bay side. he also said the its probably not a good place to bring the kids swimming because of sharks, and that you have to shuffle your feet while your walking so you dont step on a stingray!

i dont have all the gear the most of the pro anglers use so ide be out in shorts and bare feet. is that not a good idea? im thinking that walking bare foot in an area where i could potentially stand on a stingray might not be a good idea? what are some of the precautions i should take ???

also, what can i expect using a soft plastic shrimp under a rattling float? ive been reading some of the reports from the local guides from south padre all the way up to copano and it seems like the shrimp jig is the way to go out here for the reds?

anayways, thanks again for the input, its much appreciated!

Hi, chrismunn.
Since you'll have your family with you and you're somewhat inexperienced with the Texas coast, I'd recommend you fish the rock groins along the beach front. You can use bait or lures, your choice. Wading can be productive but it depends entirely on the weather and the surf. If the water isn't clear and calm, wading is a no-go. Stick with fishin' from the rocks, I've caught lots of redfish and spotted sea trout (we call them "speckled trout") there.

I love the beach and go there often but I would not go out in the water bare foot. Please get some aqua socks or something to protect your feet and your kid's feet. You never know when you might step on a bottle top or sharp piece of rock.

And whoever warned your about sharks - NOT!!!

Send me a note or a pm when you get closer to your trip and I'll let you know what the conditions are...

Fish with shrimp under a popping cork! There is a bridge off of 45 by Bayou Vista. Fish on the side where there is nothing but a dirt path. You will not get a lot of reds BUT you will get speckled trout and flounder. There is also very few trash fish there.

As for you sly, fish with live bait under a cork. Dead normal does not produce a lot of action on anything you would want to eat.

BTW if you want to do any good where i said you have to be there when the sun comes up. Most of the action is done by 8:00.

You can hook live shrimp through the head right under their horn and in front of their brain (make sure not to poke it) or through the base of their tail. Just use a small hook so that they last longer alive

hey everybody, thanks a ton for all the replies! it helps a bunch! now that leads me to ask where exactly these rock groins or bayou vista bridge is? ill be with a few other people aside with my family and im positive that none of them are going to want to be up and fishing at sunrise!

if it were me it would be on! i was actually in the water at 7:30 this morning and its my anniversary ;) the wife wasnt to happy about that though.

in any case, ill be in galveston the weekend of june 19th i believe? ill be leaving austin friday night and getting a room in houston so that on saturday i can have the whole day to roam around and do city stuff. then on sunday i guess ill have most of the day to fish?

i have a link to a map here and i was wondering if you guys might be able to use some of the referances on the map (roads and land marks) to help me find my way to those spots?

http://www.google.com/maps
