Hello all!! Looooong time no see!

I have a buddy that has a boat and we want to learn about big game fishing out by the Riggs in Galveston. We know absolute nothing about this kind of fishing. All I know is that metal pole holders were bending and 5-# lines snapping like nothing. Anyone with experience please share. I'm looking for good fish to eat.

I'm not ready to really dive big time for a reel and rod but with a few Hrs of goole research, I think I have settled on a Ugly Stick Bigwater Rod 6' and Fin Nor Offshore OF9500 reel and 65 or 70# line.

I'm also craving crabs for some reason but have no idea where to catch them. Back on the east coast, we used chicken neck, string and net to catch them. I plan to use the same technique in Galveston. The only problem is where at? Where is a good place to go crabbing? We (7 of us) plan to have a nice meal worth if we can. We all paid for our All Water fishing license and are ready to go.

Thanks and Good seeing eveyone again.

Ugly Stik Tiger 7 foot medium action, my go to for offshore fishing.

Spool them up with 50lb braid with a 50lb mono topshot (you tie to your lure with mono, which has some "spring", vs braid)

For a reel, I would go with Penn Spinfisher 6500 LL (Live liner), or larger for that 50lb line setup. It's what I run on my offshore setups (the 6500). They're awesome reels.

Sounds like a fun time...

I would reach out to Chris85 with regards to good crabbing spots, he is always out harvesting something or another and has a real good working knowledge of where the best spots are.

Good Luck!

If you are going to the rigs you will need to use eight to ten foot steel leaders on your lines. This keeps sharks from hitting the line with their tails while fighting, and they will hit it, and cutting the line. Yes, they will tail cut seventy pound mono-filament. When you cross the weed lines you can troll them with bait-o-matic lures and ribbon fish, or bait of your choosing, and catch chicken dolphin. Also if you see anything floating in the water fish it and there is a good chance you will catch a triple tail. You will run into several large species at the rigs, some being shark, ling, Spanish mackerel, king-fish, red snapper; down deep, and the list goes on.

As for crabbing it's best to catch them at the bait houses. Faster, cheaper and easier. Just my .02

Hi, thangbom. Nice to see you on the boards again.

As far as crabbing, this time of year the beachfront might be your best bet. There's lots of crabs in the surf now but you'll need to cull the "sponge crabs", females carrying eggs. Chicken necks are good.

Looks like you've got a good plan for your fishing gear, that should work. Fishable rigs are about 16 to 20 miles out from the jetties, hope your friend has a boat for that kind of trip. King mackerel and ling are target species around there. LMK if you have more questions.

good luck,
Steve

My buddy has a 18' center console fishing boat that my brother went out on a few weeks back. They said they got sea sick just barely out in the open waters. They were catching big rays. He said there arms were sore after 1 hr fishing (takes 15 minutes to bring 1 ray up). I want me those eating fish like a king or red snapper. I don't have a rig yet but I will. I'll probably be chumming via whatever food I had for b fast but ehh, I want to fish. lol

I went to Texas Xity Dyke 2 weeks back. My brother spend some $ on a generator and 500watt light set up to catch fish. We didn't catch anything but the guy next to us caught a 19'' flounder. I guess Flounder season will be nice this year. Now to find where to fish for them too. If it's anything like Jersy, shallow water somewhere with live bait.

It's not the $ saved. It's the fun and good times.

I'll send a pm to Chris as soon as I have the chance to go crabbing.
