Hey everyone, my girlfriend and I want to get certified before summer time. I went to a local dive shop and they quoted us around 600. Is this fair? Also, is there any places that you guys have had good experiences with? I just want to get the most out of the class.

I have looked into this as well (still need the class). And what I found was if you have your own pool or access to a pool there is a guy that will come to you and teach. I was quoted last year 250 a person. So your price sounds to be the norm.

You may want to see if there is a discount if you get a group together. I know my wife and myself would be in if the weekend works out.

600 may have been the price for a 3 day course with the purchase of standard equipment like mask, belt, fins so on so on.

Its always best to call around or wait for someone with knowledge like Shane to post.

Yea if you work out a good deal let me know. Plus I live in an apartment with a pool so I will offer my place. Not sure how management will feel about it but hey its easier to ask forgivenesses than permission.

Well, another thing I was thinking about was talking to the rec center people to see if they are going to do scuba certification this year. Last year they had a class that was given in the natatorium for a special discount price for UH members and students. I know that they also had scuba lessons for free just to try it out.

I divemaster at Gigglin Marlins off of Richmond. Since moving to Houston I do all my training there. They are really nice people and they have some really good instructors. Jeff Diamant is a really good instructor if you can catch a class with him... there are many other good ones as well. I think there class are around $350-400 each including books and tables. Basic gear is extra. I think most of the shops around town have the prices in the same area. The main thing is to make sure you have a good instructor, because that will make a huge difference in comfort levels when you get out on your own. If you like Gigglin's operation and commit on a class let me know and I will Divemaster the class and make sure you get good training. Let me know if you have any questions.
