I use the green film as a key to when I need to do a water change. I attribute it to a decrease in water quality due to nutrients etc in the water. After I do the water change my tank will be crystal clear and glass clean for a few weeks and then the green film comes back. I do a 20 gallon water change each time on a 110 gallon system.

I just added a few astrea snails and they take care of business. They don't mess with the rocks much and really seem to prefer the glass algae. I looked at em tonight and all 12 of em were on the glass feasting. Give it a try if you are sick of scrubbing. Doing water changes will take awhile for it to go away in my experience. I'm not saying to ignore the problem (nutrients in water) and to just treat the symptoms. you really should do the changes (i should too ;)). i'm just recommending snails as an easy way to clean the glass of the algae thats already there.
