I'm in the process of setting up my 105G RR Oceanic tank. In putting together the plumbing to the sump I succeeded in cracking the small bulkhead. If this was the drain bulkhead I'd be less concerned but it is the pump bulkhead so pressure could be an issue. What store in town is my best option for purchasing a replacement bulkhead? :? Thanks for any help.

I've bought several bulkheads from Global. Most of our sponsors probably carry them.

BTW - just a reminder, when you get the replacement bulkhead, don't overtighten. You should just hand tighten the nut, then give it a 1/4 to 1/2 turn with a wrench.

Thanks for the info. And just to be clear the breakage didn't come with tightening the nut. It happened when a screwed a PVC bushing up into the bulkhead. The threads were obviously slightly to large for the inside of the bulkhead and created a vertical crack on the drop portion of the bulkhead.

I hope thats clear cause I'm not sure it makes sense to me.

Excruciatingly clear, after I cracked two... and had two others that were leaking where I had screwed a fitting into them. I knew if I tried to tighten the fitting to stop the leak, I'd be cracking more.

I decided to convert to slip bulkheads, glued a stub of PVC in and plumbed from that.

I've also bought them at Aquatic World on Jones near 290...

Bulk head problem

Hi, I also have had this problem. When my tank was less than 2 months old I noticed it was leaking. My bulk head fiting had a small Crack in it and it leaked under pressure. Call the local dealer where i bought it and they said it was not covered and that i could BUY a new one. This upset me since i had just spent big $$$$. Havent been visiting this store since. After emailing Oceanic they confirmed that the bulk head was diffective. The manufacture of the part was replacing them. Oceanic mailed me two newbulkheads. (next day air) It might be worth sending them a email. [/b]

Alright, went to global, purchased a new bulkhead (3/4") and installed and it leaks like a seive. I've tried to fix the oceanic bulkhead, installed it and it doesn't leak until I turn the pump on, then it leaks. So now I'm looking for tips on making the new bulkhead not leak. Thanks for any help because my frustrationometer is about to red line.

Just a quick follow up, I sent Oceanic email last night after the trouble and they just sent me an email stating they will send me a new one asap. Thanks for that pointer. I'd still like some tips, if you got 'em, on making bulkheads water tight.

Some people silcone their bulkheads into place. You can always put your BH in then run a bead of silicone around it (inside the tank). As far as leaking from the threads- wrap the mail threads with Teflon tape, I have also seen people use silicone to seal the threads. Don't over tighten the BH. if you pinch the rubber seal or it looks like it is sqeazing out, it could leak. If you split the BH I would silicone the threads into place.

If the BH is a slit the glue seals it.

You probably know all this. :)
It has taken a while to get my plumbing/bulkheads leak free on my new tank.

Where it is leaking from? Do you have the gasket on the right side of the glass? If it is leaking from a threaded connection either apply a lot of teflon tape or run a bead of clear silicon around the threads and then tighten it.

The First thing i did when i figured out mine was leaking was put teflon on it. It only made the problem worst. It makes the threads bigger and opens up the leaky bulkhead. The only solution that would work is to use pcv cement and glue the fitting into the bulk head. just make sure to allow enouhg time to dry before reinstalling it.[/i]
