ok i just obtained a new 55g and i was wanting some advice...... should i buy saltwater by the gallon, or should i mix my own, and if i should mix my own whats the best way to do it? Gallon by gallon or just pour all the water in the tank and mix it like that? AS of right now there will only be live sand, and saltwater in it until the water cycles through or i get some more money what ever come first. Thnkx for your help.

If you pour it in with the sand in make sure there is no livestock. Cause they will live on cloud 9 untill your filter clears it. Ive always mixed my own and it seems to be great for me. Plus if you buy the large bucket of salt it goes a very long way. To mix it all you need is a hydrometer to measure the salt to water mix. Its realy easy to do you always get pretty exact readings. If you buy the water already premade you will have to keep buying it everytime you do your water changes and will be more $$$ in the long run I would think. Just my thoughts*

You should have a couple of $8 30 gallon Rubbermaid trash cans for storing and mixing seawater. It's best to mix your saltwater and aerate & mix it overnight with a powerhead before adding to your tank. Also, when you do add water to your tank with sand already in it, use your powerhead and some tubing from Home Depot to pump it onto a dinner plate. The plate will deflect the water and you will not get a massive sand storm.

You said it would have live sand, do you already have the live sand? If so don't mix the salt in the tank with the sand.

What kind of water are you using? Is it straight out of the tap? Because that is not normally a good idea.

And also like Cakepro said, you want the saltwater to aerate and mix overnight.
