Ok, I drained my 20 gallon reef and have everything in a trash can right now. Everything except the sand which I'm not gonna re-use.
I was going through the sand trying to find some of the Nass snails I had and as I was mixing up the sand, it was smelling like absolute crap.
Started to smell like Sulfur, how bad is that???
I'm guessing that means the sandbed was long since soured, but not sure.

All tank inhabitants were doing great, just had a major hair algae problem.

You are smelling sulfur, and it is a healthy component of your sandbed -concentrating in the bottom anaerobic layers. As long as it stays in the sandbed it is beneficial, in that it functions to break down the most basic organic components. If you've stirred everything up chances are you're going to need to rinse it out before re-using it.
