I am going to be drilling the back of my tank for my overflow, how many holes do you think are safe to drill in one side of the tank?
I was going to do a closed loop also, but am afraid of weakening it too much by putting 5 holes in it.

How much flow can one 1" bulkhead handle on the overflow?

I've got 2 1/2" holes in the back of my tank (on oppsite ends). of course, the glass is super thick on the walls (.67") so there isn't a strength problem.... I would say (it you drill them "high" on the sides) you could plumb in 2 to 3 1" holes near the center. Then brace the insides and outside with a "cemented on" peice of acrylic, if you're worried about strength.

1" x 3 would easily be enough to drive 1800-2200 gph through a sump. Of course, if you went 5 1" (3 center for the sump, 2 outer corners for a closed loop) you would have a lot more... The trick is to (I'm assuming these are for the sump....) have more "down flow" than upflow so that you can run a pump wide open in the sump without sucking it dry.....

I went with 5 holes.

2 holes for the overflow, and 3 for closed loop.
I'm praying that 1 of the overflow holes will be enough for 700-850 gph, although I have a feeling it won't be.
