I have a small 10G tank that is open top. If i dont come home everynite to top it off, the water level goes low and the power head starts sucking in air and the surface skimmer doesnt work. Ive already lowered the powerhead but was wondering if there is anyway to reduce evaporation before i start looking into an auto top off system. I have a HOB fuge so covering the tank wont work. Does anyone have experience with those nano-size float switches on nano-reef.com?

i always place my float switches in places where there are no snails, but building a snail guard is extremely simple. you can use pvc, film containers, almost anything. even smaill tupperware containers.

Or you could get you one of those Medical dose machines, that are retro fitted, the guy that told me about them is on Nano-reef also, he has a link to them, they are like 80 dollars but you can push water up to 15 foot away, so you can hide it well, then just do a continueous drip. Right now I just do the cheap siphon drip.

Is there any kind of formula to calculate the amount of drips per second? Im evaporating less that a 1/4 gallon per day.

I don't know of any formula. Just put one of the little screw valves on your line, time how long it takes it to fill up a cup, do the math. If it appears to be too slow, open the valve up more, if too fast close it down more. I don't know of any way around a certain amount of trial and error testing.
