How to Transfer Fish? (1 Viewer)

I am currently living in Austin and I want to take some fish over to Houston, but I'm a little worried about the long drive. Can it be done and if so, what is the best way?

Best way is a rubbermaid and a battery powered airaitor.

When you buy fish online, they stay closed up in a relatively small bag for 24 hrs or more while they're being shipped. And they come out ok.

Main thing is to keep them cool...

Yeah keep em cool for sure. Forgot that little detail lol. Bags are good, but depending on how much fish u actually have. Might have to think something bigger.

I only plan on transferring 2 or so fish. The drive is only 3 hours max so I'm hoping taking them in bags is sufficient enough.

A bag and keeping em cool will be plenty fine then

Something to note about shipping aquarium animals in bags, is that the remaining space (after water) in the bag is filled with oxygen prior to sealing. In a small, sealed bag of water, a fish will deplete the oxygen in the water rather quickly, make sure that there is a good amount of air in that bag too!

what i do is get one of those cheapo beer coolers from the gas station (styrofoam) and then fill with tank water, throw em in, and drive like heck...
if you get pulled over just say you have live animals on board or you can get a "fish" sticker like all the trucks have on the back haha

perhaps you could put them in a rubbermaid container and use a small air stone and a 12VDC inverter, like for powering a laptop from a car. It might make your drive a bit less stressful.

Assuming that you have a tank to acclimate the fish to when you arrive in Houston, just put them in plastic bags with half water and half air and put them in a small cooler in the back seat. the 3-4 hour drive will not be a problem at all. or if you want just buy a 5 gallon bucket and fill it half full of water and put them in there. For that short of a drive you dont need an airator. Myself and Hank have taken fish and corals back and forth between Houston and Omaha Nebraska a number of times and the only problems we had were if the buckets had too many fish or if it took over 24 hours to get them into a tank.
