I hated Metal Halides after my first experience when I was new to the hobby. I had started the tank in the winter and once May hit the window units in the 80yr old house I was living in couldn't handle the heat. Next thing I knew the 2 x 175W MH that were over a 58G were heating the tank up to 86 degrees plus. I swore never again to have halides after I nuked the tank by leaving the lights on all night long on hot May night.
But that was then....
Now with a 400w MH...
In the two weeks since upgrading my tank I have gotten the equivalent of two months of SPS growth and 4 months of Clam growth compared to the 300w VHO.
The only negative is that I melted all my Anthellia and it stunk up the entire room. However I think that may have been a combination from going from high nutrient to low nutrient water and the increase in light because even shaded Anthellia melted where as my Xenia is fine.
Point of the story I deluded myself into thinking that VHOs were a good substitute for MH but they are not.
