I am looking to redo my filter system and I was hoping to get some advice from people that have more experience than I do.

I have right now is a 110gal Oceanic reef that is 25’ high 80’ long and 18 wide. The stand is 32’ high. I have a wet/dry filter now with 1 CAP1800, 1 CAP2200 and 1 mag7. I think having all these internal pumps are creating a lot of heat in my tank.

I want to replace the wet/dry with a sump and run a external return pump that has a SQWD device attached to it. I am thinking I need about 1,000 flow rate?????

So I have started to look for a external pump that is not loud, reliable and doesn’t give off too much heat. Does anyone have any good recommendations?????

I am looking at a GenX PCX30
Dolphin sss 1200
Velocity T4

I've had Velocity pumps and they are dead silent, but they do give off a LOT of heat. The fans and/or chiller you will need to cool the tank will be a lot louder than just using a louder-but-cooler pump in the first place.

The pump I am running on my closed loop is a Panworld 150PS, which is equivalent to an Iwaki MD55RLT. It is a pressure rated pump that can handle up to 30' of head, and the SCWD doesn't seem to slow it down at all. It puts out 1100 gph at 0 head. The nice thing is these pumps don't heat up the water at all. They aren't silent, but they are definitely quieter than an Iwaki or GenX pump.

The other pump I run is a Blueline BL1100, which is a GenX knock off. It's even quieter than the Panworld, draws a ridiculously low 70 watts of power, and pumps 1100 gph at 0'. However, it is not pressure rated, so the SCWD would cut down the flow a lot.

You're welcome to drop by sometime and check out the pumps and see for yourself how much noise they make and if it's something you can live with.

I run two pumps, both Iwaki's. As mikester said, they don't add heat to the system but are not quiet either (not that they are LOUD).

I use a dolphin 800 and 1200. I used a scwd on the 1200 until the scwd broke(not sure why). The 800 runs my closed loop. I have been pleased with them. they run very cool and although they are not silent, they are pretty quiet.
