I bought a seahorse the other day and it is stressing me out. I love her to death but im scared im doing something wrong. I cant get her to eat but one ghost shrimp a day, and i know that brine isnt good for her, but thats all i can get her to eat so far. I have tried the garlic extreme, and it didnt help so much. I hate to say this but i think i might have made a mistake in buying her....... if anyone has any suggestions or helpful hints i would be forever grateful!! :(

Try gut loading the brine shrimp if they are alive with some selcon or some other additive.

If it's even eating one ghost shrimp, that is better than none.
I'd continue trying to feed it ghost shrimp until it will eat them regularly.
I have 1 seahorse that will eat 3 or 4 a day, depending on the size of them.
He's a fatty too.
Then I have another seahorse that won't eat any ghost shrimp, or brine, she lives off the pods in my tank.
Brine are too much of pain.

It will get easier. Do you know what species it is?? I bet it is Hippocampus reidi. Do a search for a picture of that and let me know if that is it or not. Then we can go from there.

I am sorry to say

I am going to be the one to day. You made the purchase, and I think you have two ways to approach this situation. One its return it to the store, or donate it to a public aquarium like Moody Gardens, I am sure that aggie fella would help you in any way needed. Or
you are going to have to do whatever you can to keep it alive.

butthe brine is just a pain to buy.

I know it sucks, but you said you want to keep it alive. Time to show you mean what you say. Follow the advice of the local folks here and you will have a better chance at success. With their help and some hard work you can hopefully make this hobby rewarding for you...
Good luck and keep your chin up, the amount of effort you put into it, should show with the results.

I agree with the above! I just had to buy one due to my fascination with them. Had her for three months and then died. All I could get her to eat was live brine. She ate fine but that's it. I've tried garlic, mysis, flakes, and to no avail. During those three months, it was stressful and a PITA. Good luck.

Katie -

Cohiba gave you a very good website for you to find out more about seahorses. You can also go to www.reefcentral.com and click on forums then find the pipefish/seahorse forum that has alot of information.

I presume you have a wild caught seahorse that can some can have problems with, but my seahorses are wild caught and have success for over a year.

One thing that I didn't see included in the posts, is how is your seahorse housed? Did you put him in your main tank?

Remember seahorses like calm waters and need plenty of "hitching posts" for them to hold on to. Our main tanks many times do not provide the type of environment that the seahorse would be most happy in.

I found that my seahorses liked the brine shrimp that I had fortifed because they would swim right by and the seahorse could catch them. After I adjusted the flow and provided more hitching posts in his own tank, he wanders and hunts down the ghost shrimp just fine.

I hope this gives you a bit more insight into these beautiful and curious creatures.
