We tried to unplug the bulbs from the ballast to see if the fuse would bust. The fuse was fine. We tried to plug the bulbs back to the ballast and it lit for a sec and fried the fuse. For some reason my Dad wanted to try a 10amp fuse insead of the 7amp that comes with it. The bulbs came on for about 3 seconds and pop! there goes the ballast. So I have new VHO bulbs coming in a day or 2 and no ballast for them. Can someone give me the cheapest place to look for a ballast that runs 4 bulbs? Doesnt have to be icecap. Thanks

ouch.. i'm sorry to hear that. it was partly my bad suggestion that caused your ballast to bust (i was speaking from personal experience w/ a different ballast & lighting combination). if you'd like, i'll chip in a little to help pay for any repair or shipping charges. i do feel responsible so let me know what I can do to make help make it up to you. i can't contribute a ton right now, but send me a PM and we'll iron something out.

Thanks for the tips guys. I have tried to call Icecap today before we blew the ballast and they didnt call me back. I went to the Icecap link on Reefcentral and posted my situation as you suggested. I am hesitant to ask Global for a borrowed ballast as I dont go in there very much would feel awkward, but that would be nice if they did. I am currently looking for a new ballast, but they are way too expensive. I am going to the frag swap this weekend and I am starting to think twice about that as I dont think the lighting in my tank is adequate anymore. My green carpet looks like crap now under my MH's and so do the rest of my corals that were doing so good under the VHOs. Thanks again guys.

Absolutely not cparka23. I thought your idea was a good one and we decided to go with that. We all take people's ideas and experiences and try them, thats what makes these pages so great and useful. Thanks for the offer though, I appreciate it.

WOW!!

I posted to Icecap at Reefcentral 10 minutes later now I have to figure out what to do until I get it back:

Sorry for the blackout.
Send it home immediately. The address is on the label. Include your shipping info and a daytime phone number inside the box. Depending on how much light you have, ship it so we see it on Monday. Call if you want to arrange faster than UPS ground return. We usually turn repairs around in 2 days or less.
Meanwhile, check your wiring by doing a continuity test.

Well, Eric.. I'm very relieved that things appear like they will turn out alright. I'm sure you are as well. Do talk to John at Global. He really is a great guy to buy from and even to just talk to. I hope that your tank inhabitants can pull through without any losses. Let me know if you need anything and I will try to help.

Oh man - I had a pair of 660's laying around for 2 months, and just sold them last week. Otherwise I could have lent one to you until your new one comes back.

Hopefully you'll find something to work in the meantime.

Thanks guys. Thats how things go Mikester. I think everything will be ok until my ballast comes back. If I lose my carpet anemone I will just beg the wife for a new one for Christmas, but a blue one!!
